Job Description: Controls Engineer (Automation)

Position Summary:

The controls engineer designs, develops, and implements control systems and automated solutions for industrial processes. They will be expected to design systems from scratch that integrate sophisticated technologies such as plural component fluid mix systems, intelligent assembly tools, robotics, and more. This engineer must adhere to safety and quality standards for all custom-designed equipment and ensure safe work practices are integrated into all processes. They will analyze user requirements, procedures, schematics, and functional specifications for automation systems. The controls engineer is expected to collaborate with coworkers across all levels of the organization in cross-functional teams to achieve collective goals.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Provide pre-sale support to Specialists and Account Managers, including:
  • Quoting custom solutions or support
  • Providing concept drawings for sales support
  • Participating in project design reviews, both internal and external
  • Travel to customer locations for onsite project review and sales support.
  • Support the Projects team by:
    • Creating equipment drawings and schematics for manufacturing and assembly
    • Preparing bills of materials for custom equipment
    • Participating in project reviews with engineering data and documentation
    • Developing and maintaining PLC and HMI programs
    • Participating in the building and assembly of equipment (hands-on environment)
    • Documenting projects with “as-built” drawings, schematics, and instruction manuals
    • Assisting Project Management with scheduling, bills of materials, drawings, and documentation
    • Traveling to customer sites for installation, start-up, and training
    • Providing post-sale support to Field Service Technicians for troubleshooting
  • Stay current with industry trends and equipment technologies.
  • Prepare detailed project reports, including expense reports and labor hours records.
  • Cross-train in other organizational disciplines as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:

    • Experience with designing, assembling, and installing specialized equipment.
    • Training or experience programming PLCs and HMIs from scratch (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens).
    • Knowledge of sensor technologies, control devices, and control signals.
    • Ability to design and specify Electrical and Pneumatic Control Panels using CAD software.
    • Knowledge of Electrical cabinet design and electrical codes.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Minimum of 3 years experience in controls programming.
    • Self-motivated, innovative, and adaptable personality.
    • Experience in robotic programming (e.g., Fanuc).
    • Proficient with various types of industrial automation.
