Job description

Job Overview

The Automation/Controls Technician utilizes skills similar to those of a mechanic or machinist. This role involves hands-on work such as repairing equipment, machining, fabrication, troubleshooting, and assembly. The technician collaborates with engineers and other technicians to build custom automation equipment, which includes systems like robots, lasers, dial indexers, pick and place mechanisms, automatic feeders, packaging, induction heating, machining, welding, forming, and pressing.

A Day In The Life
  1. Work with automation engineers and technicians to interpret designs, models in SolidWorks, drawings, and descriptions to build automation equipment.
  2. Manage projects by organizing materials from the machine shop and vendors, calculating dimensions, planning layouts, and verifying alignments and clearances.
  3. Lift, position, and assemble machine parts into mechanisms.
  4. Wire and plumb machines under guidance, troubleshoot basic automation electronics like sensors and VFDs.
  5. Operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and welding equipment, ensuring parts meet specifications.
  6. Attend training to expand knowledge in programming languages and machine maintenance, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems, and PLC/robotic coding.
What Will Help You Thrive in This Role?
  • Ability to perform essential duties satisfactorily; reasonable accommodations can be made for individuals with disabilities.
  • Five or more years of experience in a mechanic, manufacturing, or machinist environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Hands-on skills from working on vehicles, farms, or homes are a plus. An associate's degree in engineering or technology is also beneficial.
