Job summary

JIREH METAL PRODUCTS in Grandville, MI is seeking a Press Operator to safely operate automatic presses and related equipment, perform quality checks, and support production goals. The position works with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Tool Room, and Engineering teams, with opportunities to advance through progression levels while maintaining standards and 5S

Qualifications

  • The employee must be able to read, write, and follow manufacturing work instructions in English; add and subtract decimals, fractions, and percentages; and demonstrate mechanical aptitude and the ability to use measuring devices such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Limited travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate automatic presses and related equipment according to work instructions and safety procedures.
  • Perform equipment startup/shutdown, coil changes, material feeding, lubrication checks, and setup verification as trained.
  • Run equipment at standard rates while monitoring material flow, quality, and production status to minimize downtime.
  • Use gauges and fixtures to complete inspections and document results in applicable systems.
  • Identify nonconforming material and follow containment, reporting, and escalation procedures.

Job Description: Press Operator

Location: Grandville, MI

Reports To: Production Manager

Interfaces With: Production, Quality, Maintenance, Tool Room, Engineering, Steel Handling, Material Handling

Role Purpose
  • Safely operate automatic presses and related equipment to produce quality parts at established production rates.
  • Perform required quality checks, material handling, packaging, documentation, and basic troubleshooting to support efficient production and maximize equipment utilization.
  • Continuously develop the skills required to operate additional presses, support setups, troubleshoot operating issues, and advance through the Press Operator progression levels.
Core Accountabilities
Press Operation and Production
  • Operate automatic presses and related equipment, including feeders, straighteners, mandrels, stackers, sensors, and SmartPAC controls, according to work instructions and established safety procedures.
  • Perform equipment startup and shutdown, coil changes, material feeding, lubrication checks, counter adjustments, and routine operating activities. Assist with die changes, machine setups, prestaging, and setup verification as trained and assigned.
  • Run equipment at standard rates while monitoring material flow, part quality, equipment performance, and production status to minimize downtime.
Quality, Systems, and Documentation
  • Use measuring devices, gauges, and fixtures to complete required inspections, verify part quality, and accurately document results.
  • Follow JobWeb, CheckWeb, setup sheets, packaging instructions, and other applicable work instructions. Accurately record production time, material usage, scrap, rejects, and required transactions in RFPRO, Plex, SmartPAC, and related systems.
  • Identify nonconforming material or product and follow established containment, reporting, and escalation procedures.
Troubleshooting and Equipment Support
  • Identify common operating concerns involving stock alignment, material defects, feeding, sensors, counters, lubrication, setup, quality, and equipment performance. Make authorized adjustments within the operator’s demonstrated training level.
  • Promptly request assistance for tooling, maintenance, setup, or quality concerns beyond the operator’s training or authority, and support Production, Maintenance, Tool Room, Quality, Setup, and Steel Handling personnel in restoring production.
Packaging, 5S, and Team Support
  • Stack, label, package, band, and move finished product according to job and customer requirements while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work center through daily 5S activities.
  • Assist and train team members as assigned and support other production areas when business needs require.
Education, Language, And Travel Requirements

Physical Requirements

Requires extensive standing, recurring bending, good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity, continuous mental and visual attention while operating machinery, and the ability to independently lift up to 25 pounds.

Personal Protective Equipment and Work Environment

Safety glasses and hearing protection are required in all manufacturing areas, with additional PPE required by task or area. Work is performed around moving machinery and continuous noise, with possible exposure to dust, grease, moisture, fumes, odors, chemicals, varying temperatures, cuts, burns, and outdoor weather. Strict adherence to safety procedures is required.

  • Safe operation of presses and related equipment, compliance with work instructions, and timely reporting of unsafe conditions or equipment concerns.
  • Production at established standard rates with accurate reporting of time, material, scrap, rejects, and other required transactions.
  • Quality performance, accurate use of measuring devices and fixtures, and proper response to nonconforming material or product.
  • Effective troubleshooting, timely escalation of problems, equipment uptime support, workplace organization, and daily 5S performance.
  • Progression through established Press Operator skill levels based on demonstrated equipment capability, setup and troubleshooting proficiency, system knowledge, certifications, attendance, quality, and production performance. Detailed progression requirements are maintained in the Press Operator training and qualification process.
