The City of Nashua is seeking an Auto Mechanic 1st Class to join the Fleet Department. This role maintains City vehicles and equipment, diagnosing and repairing complex systems to keep fleet in top condition.

Work week is Monday through Friday, 6:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The position offers stable employment, union affiliation, and a competitive starting hourly rate up to $36.20 depending on qualifications.

Qualifications

• Must have 3+ years of related work experience.
• High School diploma plus 1 year automotive/equipment repair schooling; education may be substituted with experience.
• FMCSR certification required.
• ASE certification is a plus.
• Candidate must provide own hand tools.
• CDL-B license or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

• Perform master mechanic level maintenance on City vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic systems.

JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position performs master mechanic level maintenance in a safe, efficient, and professional manner. Responsibilities include diagnostic troubleshooting, repairing, and installing or replacing major and minor components on all City vehicles and equipment maintained by the Fleet Department. This includes gasoline, diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles, as well as heavy equipment such as loaders, dozers, and excavators. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure that all assigned vehicles and equipment are maintained in a high state of operational readiness and are safe for use. The successful candidate must be able to independently diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic systems while performing preventative maintenance and repairs to manufacturer and industry standards.

This is a full-time position with a work schedule of Monday through Friday, 6:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The position is part of the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Unit and offers an excellent work-life balance. This position is classified as Grade 5, with a starting hourly rate of up to $36.20 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum 3 years work related experience
• High School diploma plus 1-year schooling in Automotive/Equipment repair; experience in lieu of education will be considered
• Must be certified for Federal FMCSR
• ASE certification a plus
