Job Description: Auto Mechanic - New York City Department of Sanitation

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is responsible for keeping the city healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. It is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and over 5,000 vehicles and equipment.

The DSNY Bureau of Motor Vehicle Equipment is seeking an Auto Mechanic. The primary responsibilities include:

1. Overhauling, repairing, and maintaining engines, motors, and motor-powered equipment used in automotive, construction, and special-purpose vehicles.
2. Diagnosing mechanical and electrical defects as a troubleshooter.
3. Performing repairs on internal combustion engines, including brake systems, transmissions, ignition systems, and other related components.
4. Aligning wheels, repairing steering, relining and adjusting brakes and clutches, and performing minor repairs to enable vehicles to return to service.
5. Supervising and training personnel such as machinist helpers and automotive service workers.
6. Performing minor auto body repairs, preparing reports, and maintaining records and inventories.
7. Operating and testing vehicles and equipment as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic, or
• At least two and a half years of full-time experience as above, plus relevant education or apprentice experience to total five years.

License Requirements

Candidates must possess a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or a valid Motor Vehicle Driver License and a Learner's Permit for a Class B CDL. Those hired with a Learner's Permit must obtain the CDL within six months. The license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
