PRIMARY FUNCTION: The job of Auto Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of aiding and assisting in maintenance and repair of all school buses, motor pool vehicles and other related equipment; perform preventive maintenance and operational safety inspections on the school bus fleet and motor pool vehicles.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Educational Level: High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Certification/License Required: Valid Driver’s License required. Must obtain a CDL, Class “A” or “B” with “P” and “S” endorsements within 90 days from hire date.
  • Experience: Job related experience is required.
  • Physical Activities: Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 20% walking, and 70% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Written and oral communication; adhering to safety practices; operating school buses and/or district vehicles; operating tools/equipment used in maintenance of vehicles; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. adapting to changing work priorities; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working with constant and sustained interruptions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
  2. Assists in cleaning and organization of the shop, parts room, and other maintenance facilities for the purpose of maintaining a clean working environment.
  3. Assists other mechanics and/or assistant mechanics as needed for the purpose of completing difficult tasks and responding to coworker requests.
  4. Assists mechanics in overhaul, rebuilding, and replacing major and minor assemblies and components for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment are in safe operational condition.
  5. Changes and repairs tires, performs complete battery service, and brake adjustments and other minor repairs (e.g. replacing lights, spark plugs, ignition parts, latches and switches, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining general maintenance of the transportation fleet and other MCSD vehicles.
  6. Drives service truck/buses for the purpose of coordinating parts pickup, towing, and roadside service as needed.
  7. Installs antifreeze; services cooling systems (fill, drain, and flush); inspects and replaces hoses, caps, valves, etc., for the purpose of performing scheduled maintenance on the transportation fleet and other MCSD vehicles.
  8. Lubricates buses and other automotive equipment, including chassis lube, oil and filter changes, gearbox fill or drain and flush, wheel bearing pack, air cleaner service, and all other lubricating procedures for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements.
  9. Maintains tools, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, and safety within the workspace.
  10. Maintains and updates accurate service records for various vehicles for the purpose of maintaining service records on transportation fleet and other MCSD vehicles.
  11. Verifies operational safety of equipment and devices such as brakes, clutch, lights, mirrors, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, highway warning kits, horn, warning lights and buzzers for the purpose of maintaining daily operation of the transportation fleet and other MCSD vehicles.
  12. Attends department in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
