Job summary

Goodwill Industries of West Michigan, Inc. is seeking a dual-role Metal Fabrication Technician and CAD Drafter to interpret engineering plans and convert them into precise AutoCAD shop drawings in a compact shop environment.

You will draft, read and interpret structural/architectural drawings, verify welding symbols, and collaborate with engineers and shop teams to ensure accurate fabrication. This role combines hands-on fabrication with drafting duties.

Qualifications

• 2–5+ years in structural steel fabrication and CAD drafting.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D/3D) required; Tekla/SolidWorks a plus.
• Strong knowledge of welding symbols, tolerances, and shop math.

Responsibilities

• Draft accurate 2D and 3D fabrication drawings, assembly views, and parts lists in AutoCAD.
• Interpret structural and architectural plans and welding symbols.
• Prepare and measure raw steel components for fabrication.
• Perform welding and assembly per project dimensions.
• Inspect dimensions and ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Collaborate with project managers and engineers to resolve design conflicts.

Job Overview -This dual-role position combines hands-on metal fabrication with technical drafting. You will interpret engineering plans, turn them into precise AutoCAD shop drawings.

Key Responsibilities

• Drafting & Design: Create accurate 2D and 3D fabrication drawings, assembly views, and parts lists using AutoCAD.
• Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret structural engineering plans, architectural drawings, and welding symbols.
• Material Preparation: Measure, cut, saw, shear, and shape raw steel components (beams, plates, tubes).
• Welding & Assembly: Join and assemble metal parts using MIG, TIG, or stick welding according to exact project dimensions.
• Quality Control: Inspect finished pieces, verify dimensions against drawings, and ensure compliance with industry standards like AISC or AWS.
• Work alongside project managers, engineers, and shop teams to troubleshoot design conflicts before and during production.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: 2 to 5+ years of combined experience in structural steel fabrication and CAD drafting.
• Software Skills: Strong proficiency in AutoCAD (2D/3D); familiarity with Tekla Structures or SolidWorks is a strong plus.
• Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of steel properties, welding symbols, cutting tolerances, and shop math.
