Job summary

Alexandria City Public Schools is seeking an Instructional Assistant II (Autism - Special Education) to support specialized instruction for students with autism under a licensed teacher’s supervision at James K. Polk Elementary School.

The role requires 48 college credits or an AA degree (or demonstrated college-level skills). ABA training is highly preferred, with duties including observing and documenting progress, implementing IEP goals, and supporting behavioral plans in a 10-month position.

Qualifications

• Must have 48 college credits or AA degree (or demonstrate college-level skills in spelling, reading, writing, and math by passing a proficiency test).
• Formal training or certification in ABA is highly preferred.
• Experience and/or additional training in instruction of students with autism spectrum disorders.

Responsibilities

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials to help students participate in classroom activities.
• Implements intervention strategies and supports as directed by the teacher to address student goals.
• Documents student progress or behavioral observations using objective measures and records data as directed by the teacher.
• Confers with teachers to assist in evaluating student progress and/or implementing IEP goals.
• Implements academic instruction taught by a teacher to meet learning goals as described by an IEP.
• Promotes social and communication skills and emotional regulation to support independence as directed by the teacher.
• Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team to support students with behavior disorders.
• Maintains instructional materials and student files/records.
• Accepts feedback to ensure accurate and consistent implementation of educational techniques.
• Communicates and collaborates to foster a positive learning environment.
• Attends meetings and in-service presentations.
• Performs other duties to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
