Job summary

City of Austin is seeking an on-site Airport Trade Technician II to maintain airport facilities. You will support electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and electromechanical systems across AUS facilities.

Job Description:
Airport Trade Technician II

Purpose:

Under general supervision, perform routine building and equipment maintenance tasks in repair, installation, maintenance, and construction for electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and electromechanical systems in all AUS facilities.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance. Performs minor repairs to buildings and equipment.
  • Assists trade crews in the completion of assigned work orders, including materials ready, performs preventative maintenance inspections, repairs, and new equipment installation activities.
  • Assists with performing system diagnostics, calibrations, troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Operates various hand and power tools to include drills, grinders, sanders, power saws, sewer machines, pro‑press, shop vacuums, water jetters, etc.
  • Performs semi-skilled carpentry work in the construction/repair of walls, ceilings, flooring, etc.
  • Repairs and replaces electric plugs, switches, ballast, lamps, fixtures, and cords.
  • Repairs and installs door hardware/closures, kick plates, handles, locks, and crash bars.
  • Performs simple plumbing installations and repairs such as install or repair faucets, unclogs drains, replaces valves, commodes, urinals soap and towel dispensers.
  • Performs basic service on pumps, air handlers, cooling towers; repack bearing, change oil and filters, lubricate motors, gear boxes and pumps.
  • Assists in repairing system equipment and components using aerial man lifts.
  • Performs operations and maintenance tasks including confined space entry and works in hazardous environments.
  • Maintains records of repairs, calibrations and tests and records the information in the Asset Management System (AMS).
  • Reads profiles/blueprints.
  • Performs maintenance and inspections on fire extinguishers.

  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in equipment and facility maintenance.
  • Knowledge of proper methods and procedures used in cleaning work area and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in moderate levels of maintenance, construction, i.e. equipment maintenance, building walls, hanging doors and windows.
  • Knowledge of tools and materials used in equipment and facility maintenance.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to operate power tools.
  • Ability to read and understand simple blueprints.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationships with other City employees and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

Perform basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repairs. Operates hand and power tools, aerial lifts, and related equipment safely. Maintains accurate repair and inspection records in the Asset Management System (AMS). Support safe operations, including confined space entry, hazardous environments, and fire extinguisher inspections.

Assessment:

A skills assessment will be required for this position.

Salary Range :

$23.34 - $26.61 per hour

Driver’s Requirement:

This position must travel between various locations as part of the regular job duties and the individual will be required to drive a City vehicle. Position will also be required to drive on the AOA.

This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty‑six (36) months. Job Offer is contingent on having a driving record that meets the City’s Driver Record Evaluation Standards. Essential Personnel:

This position is categorized as essential personnel. Essential personnel are required to come to work during emergencies or bad weather at the airport if they are scheduled to work and, in some cases, when they are not scheduled.

Veteran:

Veteran candidates will be required to provide a copy of their DD214 at the time of interview.

Criminal History Records Check:

The top candidate will be subject to a minimum 10-year criminal background check and security threat assessment.

Language:

Must have the ability to read, write, and fluently speak in English.

Overtime:

Overtime may be required with or without notice.

Work Hours:

Sunday – Wednesday 4:00 AM - 2:30 PM

Wednesday – Saturday 4:00 AM - 2:30 PM

Sunday - Wednesday 1:30 PM – 12:00 AM

Wednesday – Saturday 1:30 PM – 12:00 AM

Hours may change according to departmental needs; work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekend work.

Shift Incentive:

Shift work includes shift differential incentive for evening and night shifts and weekends

On-Call/Call Back Responsibilities:

Position may require on-call or call back responsibilities.
