Job summary

The United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California seeks exceptional attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Civil Appeals Section. This unit handles civil matters before the Ninth Circuit, collaborating with the Solicitor General to decide when government appeals or en banc review are warranted.

Successful candidates will advise trial teams, develop civil procedure expertise, and participate in complex briefing and oral argument

Qualifications

J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
If not already an active member of the California bar, any applicant hired will be required to take and subsequently pass the California bar exam.
AUSAs must become active members of the California bar and maintain California bar membership.
United States citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

Serve as AUSAs in the Civil Appeals Section before the Ninth Circuit on a wide variety of issues.
Work with the Solicitor General's Office to determine which cases raise significant legal issues worthy of government appeal, en banc rehearing, or Supreme Court review.
Provide counsel to trial attorneys on difficult legal issues, developing significant expertise in civil procedure and strategy.
Assure quality advocacy and maintain high professional standards in civil appellate matters.
