Job summary

GBH is offering a part-time paid internship in the Aspire Works program at the GBH Archives. The role focuses on cataloging videos for the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, testing cataloging software, and improving tooling.

Qualifications

  • Name authority control experience is a plus.
  • Interest in data processing or software development.
  • Knowledge of Bash and Python is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Perform item-level cataloging of videos.
  • Test, compare, and evaluate new cataloging software and workflows.
  • Explore large scale authority control related to crediting contributors.
  • Become acquainted with the PBCore metadata schema.
  • Meet and receive mentorship from GBH Archives staff.
  • Develop and improve Python-based tooling for viewing and analyzing catalog data.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The GBH Archives catalogs, tracks, organizes, and preserves the media used to create GBH productions. The GBH Archives holds physical and digital media and paper records, including materials that need to be retained for production, legal, financial, historical, or administrative purposes. GBH Archives also collaborates with the Library of Congress to coordinate the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, a national effort to preserve and make accessible historically significant public radio and television programming that has aired over the past 70+ years.

JOB OVERVIEW

The GBH Archives is offering a part-time paid internship for a student in the Aspire Works Internship program.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • Perform item-level cataloging of videos in the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.
  • Test, compare, and evaluate new iterations of cataloging software and workflows.
  • Explore new approaches to large scale authority control, as related to crediting contributors to television and radio productions.
  • Become acquainted with the PBCore metadata schema.
  • Meet and receive mentorship from GBH Archives staff.
  • Develop and improve Python-based tooling for viewing and analyzing new catalog data..
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Experience with asset management systems, database systems, and/or cataloging.
  • Working knowledge of the basic archival principles for arrangement, description, and access.
  • Experience with name authority control is a plus.
  • Interest in data processing or software development.
  • Working knowledge of the Bash shell and Python are a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Paid Internship $17/hour (Part-time, 20 hr/wk)

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

As a host site for the Aspire Works Internship Program, GBH provides participants with hands‑on experience, mentorship, and opportunities to develop workplace skills while contributing to meaningful projects in public media.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Dates: September 14th to December 4th Candidates must have their own computer and access to Wifi. Candidates must be active in the Aspire Program

Salary Range

Salary Range $17.00 - $17.00 Compensation offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and internal pay equity.
