Job summary

Department of Safety and Professional Services seeks an Attorney Supervisor to oversee a team of attorneys and paralegals handling disciplinary matters involving licensed professionals within Wisconsin. The role partners with DSPS divisions to advise on legal and policy questions and supports administrative functions aligned with the division’s goals.

The incumbent will supervise, supervise, and mentor staff, ensuring rigorous legal work product and compliance with statutes and regulations.

Qualifications

  • A license to practice law in Wisconsin is required at the application deadline.
  • Experience providing legal counsel to medical professions and health-related fields.
  • Experience drafting legal documents including briefs, memos, proposed decisions with findings of fact and conclusions of law.
  • Experience preparing witnesses, testimony, cross-examination, and argument for court and agency proceedings.
  • Two or more years supervising or managing attorneys and professional staff in a legal environment.
  • Experience providing legal counsel to executive management.
  • Experience as a neutral (mediation, ALJ, judges).

What We Are Looking For: A team player and licensed attorney to provide supervision of staff and legal services to the Division of Legal Services & Compliance.

Where We Are Located: This position currently offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from the Hill Farms State Office Building in Madison at least 2 days per week. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

Position Summary

The Attorney Supervisor position manages and supervises a team of attorneys and paralegals responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and resolving disciplinary matters involving licensed professionals and establishments regulated by the Department of Safety and Professional Services and its attached regulatory authorities (boards). This position also partners with other DSPS divisions to fulfill the agency’s mission and serves as a legal advisor, providing guidance and recommendations to division leadership and the Office of the Secretary on legal and policy matters while overseeing administrative functions supporting the division’s strategic and operational goals.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (71-01) with an annual salary of $106,080 - $123,219 , plusa $2.75 per hour add-on. A twelve-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Qualifications

A minimum requirement for this position is a license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin at the time of application deadline.

Qualified applicants will havethe following:

  • Experience providing legal counsel and performing legal work for medical professions, such as primary care or any type of medical specialty, nurses, and other health-related professions such as massage therapy, occupational therapists, physician assistants or podiatrists.
  • Experience drafting legal documents including correspondence, memorandums, briefs, and proposed decisions, including findings of fact and conclusions of law.
  • Experience preparing witnesses, testimony, cross-examination, and argument for court and agency proceedings

In addition to having all the above, well qualified applicants will have at least oneof the following:

  • Two or more years of experience supervising or managing attorneys and professional staff in a legal environment.
  • Experience providing legal counsel to executive management
  • Experience as a neutral (e.g., mediation, ALJ, judges)
