Responsibilities

• Write appellate briefs and represent the State in administrative and circuit court hearings.

• Engage in litigation practice and strategy across child protection and welfare topics, professional licensing, open meetings and records, Medicaid and other programs, and behavioral health services.
• Analyze information and precedents to inform decisions and actions.
• Work independently while accepting guidance and input from supervisors and colleagues.
• Promote a cooperative, professional and ethical work climate to achieve shared goals.

Perform the following duties:

• An attorney interested in a range of legal subjects relating to child abuse and neglect, child support enforcement, professional licensing, open meetings and open records, child welfare agency licensing, Medicaid and other state/federal assistance programs, and behavioral health services.
• Write appellate briefs, represent the State of South Dakota in administrative and circuit court hearings, and provide general counsel services to licensing boards.
• A highly motivated attorney with a passion for serving the public and who displays a high level of effort and commitment towards completing assignments and goals.

• A person who is dedicated and who will represent the Department of Social Service with integrity and enthusiasm.

Education/Licenses:

• The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited law school; be a member of the South Dakota State Bar or willing and qualified to become a member of the South Dakota State Bar and qualify for appointment as a Special Assistant Attorney General.
• Attorney level will be determined based on experience and qualifications.
