Job summary

Illinois Farm Bureau seeks a senior counsel to provide comprehensive legal support across disciplines, including regulatory, corporate, and insurance-related matters. The role partners with business leaders to identify legal risks and deliver practical solutions in a fast-paced environment.

The successful candidate will have a JD, be licensed in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, and be prepared to obtain Illinois bar admission within a year, while staying current with continuing legal education

Job description

• Provide a broad range of legal services through independent analysis, planning, research, investigation, and development of legal advice
• Counsel and advise on matters significant to organizational operations, governance, and strategic objectives
• Review policy and account materials, corporate communications, regulatory and consumer correspondence, policies, governance documents, statutes, regulations, and regulatory guidance
• Partner with business leaders and cross-functional teams to identify legal risks, develop practical solutions, and support business initiatives
• Monitor and interpret legal and regulatory developments and recommend appropriate actions
• Manage or support litigation, regulatory inquiries, and other legal proceedings
• Monitor relevant changes in laws and regulations and provide compliance updates and recommendations
• Contribute to enterprise-wide projects and strategic initiatives while balancing legal, regulatory, and business considerations
• Practice across legal disciplines supporting Illinois Farm Bureau, COUNTRY Financial, and affiliated companies

Requirements

• Typically requires 7+ years of relevant experience or a combination of related experience, education and training
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
• Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
• Able to obtain Illinois bar admission (full admission or authorized in-house counsel status) within one year of hire
• Current with continuing legal education requirements established by the applicable licensing authority
• Experience in insurance, annuities, securities, financial services, regulatory, administrative, or corporate law preferred
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
• Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
• Sound judgment and ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice in a fast-paced environment
