The Iowa Office of Civil Rights (IOCR) is accepting applications for a Civil Rights Attorney/Attorney 1 position (mediation law focus), located in Des Moines, IA. This is a permanent, full-time, contract, and merit-covered role. If you possess strong alternative dispute resolution skills and are committed to enforcing civil rights in Iowa for housing and employment investigations, we want to hear from you!

Position Overview

As a Civil Rights Attorney, you will enforce the Iowa Civil Rights Act, evaluate discrimination complaints, analyze facts and legal standards, and collaborate with legal professionals within the Agency. The role involves extensive legal writing and investigation work.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Prepare drafts, letters, memoranda, pleadings, motions, and interrogatories for higher-level attorneys.
  2. Facilitate alternative dispute resolution between parties.
  3. Research laws, policies, and regulations from various jurisdictions.
  4. Assist senior attorneys and the Attorney General in litigation.
  5. Review and investigate complaints of discrimination, providing written reports and legal analysis.
  6. Interview complainants, respondents, and witnesses; analyze evidence; determine probable cause.
  7. Provide clear, thorough legal evaluations and written summaries.
  8. Enter data and complete reports in web-based databases.
  9. Provide training to the public.

Work is performed under supervision; travel may be required, including overnight stays.
