Job Description And Duties

Join the mission-driven team at the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) as we safeguard California's health and environment. As part of the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), DTSC is dedicated to regulating hazardous waste and overseeing the safe handling, treatment, and disposal of toxic substances statewide. In this role, you'll play a crucial part in ensuring compliance with legal requirements and supporting our efforts to restore contaminated lands. Join DTSC's Office of Legal Counsel and be a vital contributor to our mission of creating a healthier, safer California.

As An Attorney You Will Have The Opportunity To:

  • Provide legal support on matters related to administrative, civil, and criminal enforcement actions
  • Review inspection reports, penalty assessments, and other case documents
  • Draft administrative orders and civil complaints in enforcement cases
  • Review enforcement documents for compliance and consistency with state and federal laws and regulations
  • Represents the Department in administrative proceedings
  • Assist in drafting inspection and search warrants and information requests

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Employed as a practicing attorney or law clerk/Summer associate within the past 12 months
  • 1-year recent State or federal court experience as an attorney or law clerk/legal intern
  • 1 year experience with any federal or state environmental laws as an attorney, law clerk, or legal intern
  • Experience as an attorney responding to Public Records Act Requests
  • Experience as an attorney briefing high level officials (e.g., Governor’s Office)

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a(n) California State Bar License. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.
