Position Summary:
The Legal Aid Senior Staff Attorney – Family and Juvenile Law provides high-quality legal representation and advocacy to low-income individuals and families in matters involving family law and juvenile law. This role focuses on ensuring client safety, preserving family stability, and protecting the rights of children and families in legal proceedings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct legal representation in family law cases, including divorce, child custody, visitation, child/spousal support, protective orders, and guardianship.
- Represent clients in juvenile law matters, including child welfare (CPS/DCF), foster care, and delinquency cases, as appropriate.
- Conduct client intake interviews, assess eligibility, and determine appropriate legal remedies.
- Draft legal documents, pleadings, and correspondence; represent clients in court hearings, negotiations, and mediations.
- Collaborate with social workers, case managers, and community organizations to ensure comprehensive support for clients.
- Advocate for systemic changes and participate in community outreach, education, and law reform efforts related to family and juvenile justice.
- Maintain accurate case files and data for grant and compliance reporting.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in [State] or ability to become licensed within a reasonable period.
- 0–5+ years of experience in family or juvenile law preferred; strong interest in public interest law required.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and sensitivity to the challenges faced by marginalized populations.
- Strong oral and written communication, negotiation, and litigation skills.
- Ability to manage a full caseload, prioritize responsibilities, and work both independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Skills:
- Bilingual (especially Spanish or other commonly spoken language in service area).
- Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, youth, or foster care systems.
- Familiarity with local court procedures and community resources.
