The Athletics Academic Counselor and Tutorial Coordinator is responsible for conducting an academic support program for student‑athletes in designated sports while promoting an environment of academic excellence and fostering student success and retention. The incumbent monitors and enhances the opportunity for progress towards a degree, graduation, and continuing eligibility in accordance with UCR, Big West Conference, and NCAA regulations. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for overseeing the tutoring program, including hiring, ongoing training, and supervision of tutorial student staff. The full salary range for the Athletics Academic Counselor and Tutorial Coordinator is $64,050.00 - $112,140.00 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $72,000 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Special Conditions

Minimum Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development. Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership. Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching/learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy. Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education. Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students. Knowledge of researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports. Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs. Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies. Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services. Knowledge of personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership. Strong commitment to working with under-represented student populations and the ability to work successfully with students of diverse backgrounds. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, especially in regards to Academic Progress Program (APP) and the Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of the University of California degree system and the ability to read and decipher academic degree audits.

Key Responsibilities

Monitors students' academic progress. Maintains accurate student files and calculates academic progress toward degree requirements. Assists with the certification of student‑athletes and NCAA reporting by providing the documentation and monitoring required for compliance and academic eligibility related activities while displaying a working knowledge of the Academic Progress Program and the Academic Progress Rate. 20% Provides multicultural academic counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to "at risk" populations (e.g., low-income, first‑generation college, underrepresented populations, etc.).

  • Provides academic counseling specifically as it applies to student‑athletes and their NCAA athletic eligibility.
15% Hires, trains, and supervises the work of graduate interns and paraprofessionals. 10% Assumes liaison responsibility with academic departments, faculty, and community organizations. Works with academic departments, faculty, and department management to help resolve specific student academic issues. Regularly communicates with Coaching Staff, Compliance, Campus Academic Advisors, Admissions, Registrar's Office, Academic Resource Center and Counseling Center as well as other campus groups as assigned. 10% Available to the general student‑athlete body for "drop‑in" consultation and/or referral to appropriate support services. 10% Conducts comprehensive analyses of students' issues and needs and provides solutions and alternatives to problem areas. 5% Helps students develop strategies to solve academic and personal problems. 5% Assists students with the academic research process, including developing a question and hypothesis, selecting appropriate quantitative or qualitative research methods, evaluating evidence, and writing reports. 5% Other duties as assigned. 5% Plans, implements, and teaches academic and personal development seminars/courses.
