Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Lead Athletic Trainer, the Athletic Trainer evaluates, administers, and oversees evidence‑based treatment of student athletes in the field and clinical setting. The Athletic Trainer develops and updates an appropriate plan of care in collaboration with the student athlete/family to facilitate a return to prior level of function. The position operates in accordance with physician referral guidelines, state and national standards, regulatory agencies, and departmental policies and procedures. The Athletic Trainer interfaces with physicians, co‑workers, caregivers, family members, student athletes, and other healthcare providers, contributing to process improvement, professional growth, policy enforcement, and record keeping.

Essential Functions
  • Provide comprehensive athletic care and treatment in collaboration with a physician, following the Athletic Trainer’s education and training as well as national and state statutes, rules, and regulations, both on and off the field. Evaluate student athletes, develop appropriate plans of care, and deliver the six domains of athletic training: prevent, protect, evaluate, assess, rehabilitate, and counsel.
  • Act as a resource for athletic‑training related issues to assistive personnel and staff from other departments. Refer student athletes to appropriate HonorHealth physicians and care providers, and confer with all referred physicians to clarify treatment plans and discuss student athlete needs, status, and discharge plans.
  • Serve as a liaison between physicians, administrators, coaches, parents, and student athletes regarding injury prevention, diagnosis, care, management, treatment, and rehabilitation.
  • Maintain records of student athlete interactions, visits, and sessions in EMR software.
  • Supervise the assigned athletic training team and designated location: mentor, lead, schedule, and direct staff to ensure quality of care, recruit, train, and retain athletic training staff, and manage emergency action plans, safety action plans, inventory, cleanliness, and staffing.
  • Educate interns, students, volunteers, and the community on appropriate care, training, and safety measures. Act as preceptor to assigned student athletic trainers, teaching standards of care, describing responsibilities, and supervising care delivered by the student trainer.
  • Participate in departmental and interdepartmental staff meetings, in‑services, utilization review programs, committees, pre‑season physical exam clinics, and other assigned duties. Maintain all required licenses and certifications.
  • Work variable and irregular hours and shifts as required. Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Education
  • Master’s Degree in Athletic Training may be substituted with experience and NATA BOC certification – Preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree – Required.
Experience
  • 1 year of experience in a related role – Preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required.
  • Rehab/ATC – Athletic Trainer Certificate Upon Hire – Required.
  • CPR / AED / First Aid – Required.
  • NATA BOC Certification Upon Hire – Required.
