Job Summary
The position of Athletic Trainer is to practice the prevention, care and rehabilitation of injuries incurred through athletic participation with the use of physical modalities. Under basic supervision, collaborates with physicians to optimize student athlete activity and participation in athletics. Works to create a safe playing environment for students by monitoring and controlling environmental risks.
Core Responsibilities
- Administer a program to provide emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation of injured high school athletes in compliance with National Athletic Trainers’ Association guidelines
- Prevention of athletic injuries and/or illnesses
- Evaluation and recognition of athletic injuries or illnesses
- First aid and emergency care for weekday practices
- Be on-site for all home games and weekday practices
- Travel to all varsity football games and regional and state tournament games in all sports, as scheduled by the campus athletic director
- Assist the head coach in developing an emergency medical plan for each sport
- Counsel athletes and their parents in seeking appropriate medical assistance for follow-up care and/or surgery
- Work under the direction of the team physician or other cooperating physician regarding athletes’ treatment goals
- Advise coaches when an athlete may return and to what extent participation in practice or games following injury or illness
- Maintain records on athletic injuries, physician referrals, and treatments administered
- Conduct in‑service programs for coaching staff on the care and prevention of athletic injuries
- Initiate and administer a student trainer program; include instruction and supervision in first aid techniques, protective taping, wraps, dressings, and use of therapeutic modalities
- Organize, inventory, and requisition all training room supplies; submit annual budget for first aid and medical supplies
- Supervise the use of facilities and equipment needed for rehabilitation or treatment of athletic‑related injuries
- Meet recertification standards as established by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association
- Recruit, train, and supervise student trainers; schedule them for athletic competitions and practices
- Provide classroom coverage in case of campus‑declared emergency
- Perform other duties as assigned or required
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Skill in BLS/CPR and First Aid techniques
- National Athletic Trainers Association rules, regulations, and code of ethics
- District and Department policies and procedures
- Arizona Interscholastic Association Bylaws
- Assessing, identifying, and treating various athletic injuries
- Cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals; clear and concise communication
- Coordinating and directing athletic events
- Customer service orientation
Qualifications & Requirements / Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training and 750 hours of clinical rotations, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Valid teaching certificate, preferred
- Valid Arizona Driver’s License
Required License and Certification
- Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Arizona Athletic Trainer Certification
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands to handle or feel objects or controls, and use a keyboard or keypad. The employee occasionally must reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk, bend and sit, and occasionally stoop or kneel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds and occasionally lift or move over twenty‑five pounds; may involve lifting up to 50 pounds or lifting student athletes.
