Qualifications

• Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training.
• State licensure as an Athletic Trainer in Illinois is required.
• BOC certification preferred; CPR per AHA within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Interview for medical history and document findings in the medical record.
• Obtain medical information and vital signs for physician examination and recordkeeping.
• Advocate for patients and protect patient rights while addressing service concerns.
• Communicate with physicians and PAs regarding patient care.
• Assist with injury assessment and treatment per professional standards.
• Demonstrate bracing, casting, and patient instruction per policy.
• Provide pre- and postoperative instructions and document education.
• Coordinate patient care across Clinic departments and external facilities.
• Maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality.
• Support staff and orient new personnel to the specialty.
• Ensure clean, safe, and organized work environment.
• Assist the physician with examinations and procedures as needed.
• Schedule procedures and referrals as necessary.
• Adhere to OSHA training and Clinic policies.
• Provide excellent customer service per SC Way.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Athletic Trainer is responsible for serving as a clinical and educational resource for staff, students, and physicians. Responsible for providing quality care to patients of all ages through the proper utilization of assessment, planning, implementation and instruction.

Job Relationships

• Reports to the Operations Manager

Principal Responsibilities

• Interview for a medical history, assessment of health knowledge and maintenance, and document findings in the medical record.
• Obtain medical information, chief complaints, vital signs and diagnostic test results in preparation for physician examination and documents in the medical record.
• Serve as a patient advocate by protecting patient rights and gives attention to complaints regarding service
• Communicate with physicians and NP/PAs regarding patient care.
• Demonstrate the ability to perform injury assessment, treatment as set forth by the National Athletic Training Association Board of Certification and Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
• Demonstrate proper bracing and fitting
• Apply and remove casts, provide patient instruction and documents in medical record.
• Provide pre and postoperative instruction for specific surgical and/or medical procedures.
• Document patient education in the medical record.
• Demonstrate appropriate delegation of duties, judgment, safety, initiative and flexibility in scheduling, organizational skills, and appropriate time management.
• Assist the physician in the examination, treatment of the patient by handing instruments, providing dressings, preparing equipment, etc. according to Infection Control Policy.
• Orient new personnel to specialty.
• Provide emotional support and guidance to patients/family.
• Maintain professional mannerism.
• Maintain clean, neat, orderly work environment.
• Communicate tactfully in person or by telephone.
• Coordinate the care of the patient by interacting with all Clinic departments, hospitals, nursing homes and pharmacies.
• Demonstrate professionalism by adhering to performance standards including dress code.
• Ensure confidentiality for patients and staff.
• Maintain knowledge by attending appropriate education programs, reading current journals and literature and documents for yearly evaluation.
• Perform pre-certifications/referrals for insurance companies as necessary.
• Schedule procedures/surgeries as necessary.
• Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
• Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
• Provide excellent customer service and adhere to SC Way customer service philosophy.
• Perform other job duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

• Bachelor Degree in Athletic Training

Licenses/Certificates

• Licensed by the State of Illinois
• Certification through the athletic trainers Board of Certification (BOC) preferred.
• Preferred to be a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association
• CPR certification per AHA guidelines required within 30 days of hire.

Working Environment

• Extensive walking, standing, kneeling and heavy lifting.
