Job summary

Spire Orthopedic Partners is seeking an Athletic Trainer to work with Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS) in partnership with Iona University Club Rugby. The role supports athletic programs, provides treatment, and coordinates care to keep athletes competition-ready.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in athletic training and valid NATA certification, with at least one year of experience. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training or equivalent.
  • Holds valid NATA certification/license for athletic trainer in CT/NY.
  • Minimum one year experience as athletic trainer.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates physical condition and advises and treats players to maintain maximum physical fitness for participation in athletic competition.
  • Prescribes routine and corrective exercises to strengthen muscles.
  • Performs massage and soft tissue techniques to alleviate pain, restore function/motion and diminish edema.
  • Renders first aid to injured players, such as giving artificial respiration, cleaning and bandaging wounds, and applying heat and cold to promote healing.
  • Works with physicians to provide a continuum of care to patients.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of care of players in EMR.
  • Assists with administration of pre-participation and exit physicals.
  • Acts as a liaison with the team physician and ONS physicians to refer athletes for evaluation and diagnostic imaging when warranted.
  • Coordinates formal Physical Therapy, imaging, and follow-up appointments for athletes with allied healthcare professionals.
  • Refers athletic injuries to physicians for diagnosis and/or treatment.

What You’ll DoAs an Athletic Trainer working with Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS) and in partnership with the Iona University Club Rugby. Responsibilities as noted below.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Evaluates physical condition and advises and treats players to maintain maximum physical fitness for participation in athletic competition.
  • Prescribes routine and corrective exercises to strengthen muscles.
  • Performs massage and soft tissue techniques to alleviate pain, restore function/motion and diminish edema.
  • Renders first aid to injured players, such as giving artificial respiration, cleaning and bandaging wounds, and applying heat and cold to promote healing.
  • Works with physicians to provide a continuum of care to patients.
  • Utilizes wrapping/strapping techniques to prevent and help support injured areas.
  • Uses modalities as appropriate for patient care.
  • Confers with physical therapy team members individually and in conference to exchange, discuss, and evaluate player information for planning, modifying and coordinating treatment programs.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of care of players in EMR.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Assist with administration of pre-participation and exit physicals
  • Acts as a liaison with the team physician and ONS physicians to refer athletes for evaluation and diagnostic imaging when warranted
  • Coordinates formal Physical Therapy, imaging, and follow-up appointments for athletes with allied healthcare professionals
  • Refers athletic injuries to physicians for diagnosis and/or treatment.
  • Set-up and breakdown of all athletic training supplies needed for practices/games
  • Communication with coaches regarding treatment plan for injuries and adequate injury prevention
  • Determines if a player is capable of continued participation in a game and/or practice if the player is injured
  • Organizes, inventories and requisitions medical team and team supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Follows all HIPAA rules as instructed.
  • Follows ONS’ policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Who you are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training or equivalent.
  • Holds valid NATA certification/license for athletic trainer in CT/NY State
  • Minimum one year experience as athletic trainer.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
