Job description

Athletic Trainer

DESCRIPTION: The athletic trainer will provide professional athletic training services for high school athletic programs under the direction of the school physician or by written referral from a physician, and under the general supervision of the school Athletic Director. The trainer will follow the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics set forth by the National Athletic Trainers Association within the parameters of the New York State Athletic Trainers licensing law. The role involves related work as required.

DUTIES: Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Establishing and maintaining an effective athletic training program for student athletes;
  2. Providing First Aid, injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning for student-athletes;
  3. Making appropriate physician referrals;
  4. Maintaining accurate records of injuries and treatments;
  5. Administering baseline concussion testing for high school and modified athletes;
  6. Providing coverage at home athletic events and practices throughout the school year;
  7. Providing away coverage for varsity football and other sports during playoffs;
  8. Supervising the clearance process for injured athletes during the sports season;
  9. Maintaining communication with the school physician regarding healthcare and treatment/rehabilitation of injuries;
  10. Communicating with coaches about the care and treatment of student-athletes;
  11. Managing and ordering supplies and equipment for the athletic training room;
  12. Ensuring each team is equipped with appropriate medical equipment;
  13. Assisting coaching staff in implementing and evaluating sport-specific conditioning programs;
  14. Performing other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

SALARY: Commensurate with individual terms of employment.

In accordance with New York Education Law, Title 8, Article 162, Section 8355, candidates must possess and maintain licensure as an Athletic Trainer, current CPR/Emergency Cardiac Care certification, and an appropriate class Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. A clearance for employment from the State Education Department is also required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Knowledge of injury diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation principles, training methods, hygiene precautions; skill in medical techniques; ability to instruct and evaluate athletes and staff; establish effective relationships; operate a motor vehicle; tact, good judgment, emotional stability, initiative, and physical fitness to perform essential functions.
