Job summary

Danbury High School is seeking an Athletic Trainer to coordinate a safe athletic environment, provide injury assessment, and manage emergencies during practices and games. The role requires collaboration with medical practitioners and adherence to medical protocols.

Responsibilities include maintaining injury records, managing budgets for supplies, and developing Emergency Action Plans and concussion policies. Strong communication with coaches, parents, and clinicians is essential.

Qualifications

  • Certified Athletic Trainer (BOC) required.
  • BS degree required.
  • AED, CPR, First Aid and Concussion certification.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents and medical professionals.
  • Understanding of all interscholastic athletic programs.
  • Previous experience as an Athletic Trainer in a school setting.
  • Experience in creating Emergency Action Plans.
  • Experience in creating and implementing Concussion policies and procedures.

  • Follow return-to-play protocol for concussed students/athletes.
  • Collaborate with Director of Athletics on equipment needs for the athletic training room.
  • Maintain inventory of medical kits and water coolers used by teams.
  • Attend away contests during post-season as requested by the Director of Athletics.
  • Assist the Director of Athletics as needed.
  • Update venue Emergency Action Plans and concussion policies.

Location: Danbury High School

Responsible for coordinating a safe environment for athletic activities, providing injury assessment and management and emergency care at practices and games. Must collaborate with medical practitioners to coordinate treatment as well as medical protocols and procedures. Develop comprehensive venue and condition-specific emergency action plans. Maintain adequate medical records on all injuries and rehabilitation procedures. Establish and maintain a budget for athletic training supplies and equipment.

Job responsibilities of the athletic trainer include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide athletic training services for all home athletic practices and contests at Danbury High School and any away varsity football contests, if requested by Director of Athletics.
  • Maintain accurate records of injuries and treatments and provide insurance claim for sports injuries.
  • Communicate directly with coaches, parents, nurses and student/athletes regarding a student's injury.
  • Act as a liaison between family physicians and specialists, the school district, athletes and parents.
  • Follow the return to play protocol with any student/athlete exhibiting signs of a concussion.
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Athletics regarding any equipment needs for the athletic training room.
  • Maintain inventory of all medical kits and water coolers that are used by teams during the season.
  • Maintain medical kits stocked with all necessary items; ensure water coolers are cleaned appropriately before redistributing.
  • Attend other away contests during a team's post-season play, as requested by the Director of Athletics.
  • Assist the Director of Athletics as requested.
  • Update and maintain venue specific Emergency Action Plans.
  • Update and maintain concussion policies and procedures.
  • Determines the need for and administers proper athletic training techniques prior to and during games/practices to decrease risk of injury. Athletic training techniques can include: taping, wrapping, bracing, proper hydration and minor wound care.
  • Works closely with physical therapists and area physicians to treat athletes. Maintains proper lines of communication to ensure athlete is getting optimal care within the team.
  • Prudently manages emergency incidents, coordinates EMS and acute care procedures including Basic Life support to reduce the impact on function of an injured athlete.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift patients using biomedical techniques frequently throughout the course of a work day/shift; must be capable of easily lifting fifty (50) pounds of weight alone.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stand, and reach constantly during a work day/shift.
  • Visual acuity (near and distant) sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people, and understand written direction.
  • Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand and give directions.
  • Ability to push wheeled equipment throughout the facility and in the community.
  • Fine motor skills adequate for scheduling and preparing athletes, equipment, and supplies for treatment.
  • Ability to participate in sustained activities for many hours in duration in accordance with state labor laws.

Director of Athletics

Salary:

$60,000 commensurating with experience, non-union position

  • This is a non-union position with the holidays as provided similar to employees. Access to health and welfare benefits is included.

The work year will follow the student athletic calendar each school year, plus summer sports training season as scheduled annually.
