Job summary

Michigan Technological University seeks an Athletic Communications Director for the General Athletics department. The 12-month, full-time appointment reports to the Assistant Athletic Director - Media Relations and focuses on publicizing MTU Athletics and Recreation across platforms.

You will manage media relations, design collateral, maintain Huskies.com, produce videos, and coordinate events for football, basketball, soccer, and track & field while traveling with teams as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, Communications or related field.
  • Experience with graphic design and publication software.
  • Experience with content management systems for the web.
  • Experience in videography and with various social media platforms.
  • Experience crafting, editing and posting press releases.

Responsibilities

  • Tell the story of Michigan Tech Athletics and Recreation to multiple internal and external audiences through various means.
  • Assist with the department’s graphic design needs.
  • Develop strong relationships with local, regional, and national media and partners.
  • Create, write, capture, edit, and/or design all collateral material to successfully promote assigned sports: football, men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, cross country, and track & field.
  • Maintain MichiganTechHuskies.com through a content management system.
  • Compile statistics and serve as record keeper for assigned sports with the assistance of student stat crew.
  • Nominate student-athletes for conference, regional, and national awards for assigned sports.

Summary

Michigan Technological University is seeking a AthleticCommunications Director for our General Athletics department. Thisis a 12-month full-time appointment, reporting to the AssistantAthletic Director - Media Relations. The Athletic CommunicationsDirector, working within the external relations team, has theprimary responsibility of publicizing Michigan Tech Athletics andRecreation and assigned sports. The candidate should be a creativeand motivated individual, eager for hands-on experience in theareas of media relations, graphic design, video, digital and socialmedia.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties
  1. 1. Tell the story of Michigan Tech Athletics and Recreation tomultiple internal and external audiences through variousmeans.
  2. 2. Assist with the department’s graphic design needs.
  3. 3. Develop strong relationships with local, regional, and nationalmedia and partners.
  4. 4. Create, write, capture, edit, and/or design all collateralmaterial to successfully promote assigned sports: football, men’sand women’s basketball, soccer, cross country, and track &field.
  5. 5. Maintain MichiganTechHuskies.com through a content managementsystem.
  6. 6. Compile statistics and serve as record keeper for assignedsports with the assistance of student stat crew.
  7. 7. Nominate student-athletes for conference, regional, and nationalawards for assigned sports.
  8. 8. Travel with assigned sports (as listed above) to selectaway-from-campus events.
  9. 9. Maintain and run social media accounts for assigned sports anddepartment accounts.
  10. 10. Film and produce videos (assigned sports) for various platformsin collaboration with the Director of Video Production &Operations.
  11. 11. Produce game programs and other publications for assignedsports.
  12. 12. Assist with the production of scripts for home events.
  13. 13. Produce Huskies Club marketing materials and donor fulfillmentsupplies.
  14. 14. Work with the external relations team to plan and organizevarious banquets, luncheons, student work schedules, publicationschedules, and other special events.
  15. 15. Encourage continuous improvement practices among employees.Commit to applying continuous improvement strategies to strategicgoals and leadership skills.
  16. 16. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices toeveryday work.
  17. 17. Ensure compliance with all applicable university, state, andfederal regulations.
  18. 18. Functional supervision is exercised over clerical supportstaff, graduate students, and student assistants.
  19. 19. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies andapplying them to everyday work. Actively engage in Universitycontinuous improvement initiatives.
  20. 20. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices toeveryday work.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, Communications orrelated field
Required Experience
  • Experience working with graphic design and publicationsoftware
  • Experience with content management systems for the web
  • Experience in videography
  • Experience with various social media platforms
  • Experience crafting, editing and posting press releases
Desirable Education and/or Experience
  • Two Years experience working within a Collegiate AthleticDepartment
  • Experience working with statistics software
  • Public speaking and/or radio broadcasting experience
  • Experience in photography
