Athletic Coach – Head Men’s Volleyball – Cummings High

Alamance‑Burlington Schools, Hugh M Cummings High – Burlington, North Carolina

Position Purpose

The Athletic Coach is responsible for providing appropriate coaching expertise and guidance to student athletes related to the sport for the duration of the season. The Coach teaches and models good sportsmanship, techniques, and skills, ensures safe practices to protect students from injury, and serves as a positive role model for students, the school, and the system.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Training in Physical Education or the specific sport
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of all Athletic Policies approved by the Board of Education
  • Comprehensive knowledge of existing system, state, and conference regulations
  • Understanding of the proper administrative line of command
  • Knowledge of the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques associated with the athletic program
  • Knowledge of state and federal requirements regarding physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility for athletic participation
  • Knowledge of training rules and other regulations pertaining to the sport
  • Knowledge of guidance and safeguards for athlete safety during medical injuries and emergencies
  • Knowledge of the process for initiating policies and procedures applicable to the athletic program
Education, Training, & Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Additional coursework and/or training in Physical Education or the sport
  • Equivalents of training and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Certification & License Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Physical Education or a related area
  • Minimum of three (3) years of coaching experience at the middle or high school level
  • NC Certification as Teacher, preferably in Physical Education
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Implement and enforce Athletic Policies for the entire staff
  • Interpret and enforce school system, state, and conference regulations consistently
  • Introduce grievance procedures through proper channels
  • Attend required public, staff, and departmental meetings
  • Establish core philosophy, skills, and techniques for the sport
  • Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings for program awareness
  • Encourage professional growth and clinic attendance per local policy
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistants at season’s end
  • Maintain discipline, address grievances, and promote morale and cooperation
  • Assist with scheduling, transportation, and logistical requirements for tournaments and special events
  • Prepare for sports events and practices, ensuring adherence to facility times
  • Coordinate events and practice times with maintenance and school staff
  • Provide documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility per state and system requirements
  • Provide safeguards for equipment maintenance and protection
  • Advising the Athletic Director on concerns, recommendations, and procedural changes
  • Teach athletes sport-specific rules and regulations
  • Monitor academic status and conduct of student athletes for eligibility
  • Attend all practices and games
  • Offer assistance, guidance, and safeguards to participants
  • Develop injury, medical, and emergency policies
  • Submit injury paperwork to the athletic office within 24 hours
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians
  • Determine discipline, enforce due process, and contact parents as needed
  • Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection
  • Participate in budgeting with the Athletic Director for future seasons
  • Recommend equipment specifications for type, style, color, and technical needs
  • Operate within budget appropriations
  • Account for equipment and collect fees for lost or unreturned items
  • Oversee issuance, storage, and reconditioning of equipment
  • Submit annual inventory and records
  • Mark and identify equipment before issuance or storage
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coach offices, authorizing entry and issuance
  • Restrict athletes to authorized areas of the building at appropriate times
  • Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games, ensuring cleanliness
  • Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of sports equipment and facilities
  • Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks when custodians are not on duty
  • Encourage respect for peers, equipment, and school property
  • Organize parental, coach, player, and guest meetings for preseason
  • Recruit athletes within and outside the school
  • Promote the sport via media, Little League programs, and other channels
  • Coordinate with the Athletic Director and Chief Public Officer for media releases
  • Maintain public relations with media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans
  • Present information on schedules, tournaments, and results to media
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal
