POSITION PURPOSE
The Athletic Coach is responsible for providing appropriate coaching guidance to student athletes related to a particular sport for the duration of the sports season. The Coach teaches and models good sportsmanship, safe practices, and skill development, and serves as a positive role model for students and the school community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma/GED
- Training in Physical Education or particular sport
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of Athletic Policies approved by the Board of Education
- Comprehensive knowledge of system, state, and conference regulations
- Understanding of administrative hierarchy and sport-specific techniques
- Knowledge of safety requirements, medical emergencies, and eligibility procedures
- Knowledge of policy and procedure development for athletic programs
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma/GED
- Additional coursework or training in Physical Education or a particular sport
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education or related area
- Minimum of three (3) years of coaching experience at the middle or high school level
- NC Certification as Teacher, preferably in Physical Education
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement and enforce athletic policies and school system regulations
- Coordinate with staff to implement sport policies and safety guidelines
- Attend required meetings and communicate effectively with staff and stakeholders
- Establish sport-specific coaching philosophy, skills, and techniques
- Design trainings and staff development to ensure program awareness
- Encourage professional growth and clinic attendance
- Delegate duties, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers
- Manage discipline and morale within the program
- Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation, and tournament requirements
- Prepare facilities and ensure adherence to practice and game schedules
- Coordinate events with maintenance and school staff
- Provide documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility
- Safeguard equipment and facilities; manage inventory and reporting
- Advise Athletic Director on policy and procedural changes
- Communicate student-athlete eligibility and monitor grades and conduct
- Attend practices and games; provide guidance and safety for participants
- Prepare for injuries, medical attention, and emergencies; submit required paperwork
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians
- Enforce discipline with parents when necessary and coordinate with families
- Support college and post-secondary planning for athletes
- Assist in budgeting and equipment needs for the season
- Maintain and issue equipment, conduct inventories, and secure storage
- Organize facilities and ensure cleanliness; safeguard property
- Promote the sport within and outside the school and maintain public relations
- Coordinate with Athletic Director and communications staff for releases to media
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal
