The Association Wellness Director leads the YMCA's wellness and chronic disease intervention programs. This role involves strategic leadership, program development, and community outreach. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing wellness programming strategies.
- Supporting branch Wellness staff.
- Driving innovation in fitness and group exercise programs.
- Acting as a spokesperson for the YMCA's chronic disease programs.
- Analyzing program data and ensuring outcome management.
- Supervising the Health Initiatives team and providing staff support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and implement wellness programming strategies based on the association's strategic plan and goals, including strategies to support the integration of the 9 dimensions of wellness into Y programs and the advancement of the Y’s chronic disease intervention programs.
- Drive annual innovation in the YMCA wellness and GEX program offering that is sustained, impactful, and enhanced in future years.
- Develop, manage, and monitor assigned operating budgets and meet or exceed budget targets.
- Assist branch leadership in the oversight and evaluation of wellness programs to increase member engagement and retention, and provide recommendations on best practices and trends.
- Serve as a resource to the YMCA branch Wellness Directors and Coordinators to drive excellence in general fitness/group exercise (GEX) operations and programs/services to members and staff.
- Serve as a liaison, ambassador, and advocate for the YMCA’s chronic disease prevention and management programs within public health, physician, and payer communities.
- Act as Wellness speaker/spokesperson: Represent the YMCA at appropriate business & community groups and interface with news organizations and media outlets as requested.
- Attend community meetings on behalf of the YMCA and maintain appropriate relationships with area organizations and community leaders.
- Track and report key health & wellness goals – group exercise attendance, evidence-based program attendance, personal training, and health initiative programs.
- Analyze program data to ensure outcomes and outcome management for health partners, payors, and, when appropriate, Medicare and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Create and submit all required reports.
- Lead the Association’s Wellness LIT’s monthly meetings, subcommittee initiatives, and other key Association-wide work.
- Directly supervise the Health Initiatives team including interviewing, hiring, and training staff, planning, assigning, and directing work, conducting continuing education, and managing performance.
- Provide support to the recruitment, training, development, and evaluation of Wellness Directors and wellness staff.
- Serve as a member of Y management and support the overall objectives of the YMCA.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree required. Preferred majors: Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, Sports Management.
Experience:
- (5) Five years of progressively responsible experience in program management in wellness and/or public health.
- (5) Five years of progressively responsible experience with staff management and supervision, fiscal management, program growth and retention, and community relationship building.
- Demonstrated community involvement and resource development experience.
- Demonstrated success in building strong partnerships effectively among a wide variety of stakeholders (physicians, public health officials, employers, community-based organizations, and health seekers) to advance a common cause.
Certification(s) and Requirements:
- Certification in CPR at the level of Basic Life Support or Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration and associated-determined safety training required within 30 days of hire.
- Current certification from an NCCA-accredited organization in either Personal Training or Group Exercise.
Technical Skills and Knowledge:
- Must have basic expertise in common office software, including Word and Excel.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with and observe program participants, members, and YMCA staff.
- Proficient in and able to clearly communicate specific components and usage of cardio-respiratory, selectorized, free weight, and other common exercise equipment (i.e., rubberized resistance, stability balls, medicine balls, etc.).
- Ability to conduct scientifically valid fitness assessments and appropriately interpret the results.
- Demonstrate commitment to the mission, cause of the YMCA, and uphold its values and ethics.
- Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.
- Willingness and ability to be a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect. All employees are required to follow the child abuse and neglect reporting process: completion of Suspected Child Abuse/Neglect reporting form, calling children protective services (696-Kids) and notifying your immediate supervisor, branch executive, risk management, and human resources department(s).
