Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Veterinarian to join our team at Westmoreland & Slappey Animal Hospital. The ideal candidate is passionate about providing high‑quality veterinary care, possesses excellent communication skills, and is willing to work closely with the Hospital Manager and Regional Director.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive patient examinations and medical work‑ups.
  • Communicate with clients and educate them on animal health.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures, consult on and perform surgeries.
  • Maintain accurate medical records for all patients.
  • Handle pharmacy duties, including prescribing medicines and following controlled substance protocols.
  • Promote teamwork and staff efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the Hospital Manager on weekly priorities and expectations.
  • Evaluate and monitor protocols for daily operations from intake to discharge.
  • Monitor cases and attend daily rounds when possible to ensure highest standards.
  • Participate in practice management updates and training at all levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications (Required)
  • Veterinarian degree (DVM or VMD) from an accredited college or university.
  • Current State Veterinary License.
  • DEA registration (must be obtained and maintained).
  • At least 1 year of experience in a veterinary practice.
  • Strong diagnostic, clinical, surgical, and dental skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team‑oriented environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with team and clients.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate and high‑quality veterinary care.
  • Proficient in client communication: eliciting information, establishing rapport, explaining treatments to pet owners.
  • Comfortable handling stressed, ill, or painful animals with confidence and reassurance.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge in cardiovascular, respiratory, orthopedic, neurological, and other necessary examinations.
  • Problem‑solving: ability to develop solutions for high‑quality veterinary hospital management.
  • Professionalism: ability to give and receive constructive criticism within a high‑quality veterinary team.
  • Business acumen: understanding of management and finances of veterinary practice.
  • Ethical knowledge guiding patient‑care decisions.
  • Commitment to continuing education and facilitating learning for others.
