Job summary

Tokio Marine HCC - Public Risk Group is seeking an Associate Underwriter to review applications, classify risks, and determine pricing within authority. This role focuses on liability, property, or special contingencies for municipal entities and related lines.

Ideal candidates have a 4-year degree and progressive underwriting experience; strong communication, organization, and analytical skills are essential for success in a hybrid in-office setting in the Troy, MI area.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 year Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, a related field, or the equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Progressive Underwriting experience in specialty or related area preferred; knowledge of state laws is a plus.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word).

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate new and renewal policy applications and related documents to classify and assess each risk, determine acceptability, assign rating, and pricing.
  • Contact brokers to provide information and act as an underwriting resource within designated timelines.
  • Create and maintain documentation including files and underwriting worksheets per guidelines.
  • Adhere to underwriting authority directives and company policies and procedures.
  • Approve or deny within given authority or recommend action to higher authority.
  • Cultivate relationships with internal and external contacts to promote business development.
  • Serve as a resource to staff on procedures and guidelines.
  • Develop understanding of factors affecting policy rating and risk.

Tokio Marine HCC - Public Risk Group, a member of the Tokio Marine group of companies, is a market leader in providing specialized insurance products for municipal entities. Ideal candidate lives within reasonable commuting distance to Troy, MI and is comfortable with a Hybrid In-Office Work Schedule (3 days in-office, 2 days work from home)

Associate Underwriter

This position is responsible for reviewing insurance applications to evaluate, classify, and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing. Establishes, maintains, and develops agency and/or broker relationships. Position has defined underwriting authority and business development responsibility. Provides underwriting in single or multiple areas of liability, property, or special contingency coverage.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate new and renewal policy applications and related documents to classify and assess each risk, determine acceptability, assign rating, indicate endorsements and limits, and determine appropriate pricing.
  • Contact and respond to verbal and written inquiries from brokers within designated timeframe to provide appropriate information and serve as an underwriting resource.
  • Create and maintain all documentation (physical and electronic) including new and renewal bound files, underwriting worksheets, documentation of phone conversations, and other key documents according to departmental guidelines.
  • Adhere to all company underwriting authority directives, underwriting guidelines, and other applicable company policies and procedures.
  • Approve or deny within given authority or recommend approval or denial to higher authority.
  • Cultivate relationships with internal and external contacts to facilitate the underwriting process, promote business development, and to remain abreast of industry trends.
  • Serve as a resource to other departmental staff with regards to underwriting procedures and other departmental guidelines.
  • Develop understanding of various factors that affect and influence policy rating and risk.
Position Knowledge, Skills, And Requirements
  • Minimum 4 Year Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, a related field, or the equivalent education and/or experience
  • HIGHLY PREFERRED: Majored in Risk Management and Insurance
  • Studies toward attaining a Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) or equivalent insurance designation depending on specialty area
  • Progressive Underwriting experience in specialty or related area that includes a working knowledge of state laws preferred.
  • Possess and have ability to apply basic knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
  • Good organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledgeable of industry changes, legal updates, and technical developments related to applicable area of the Company’s business to proactively respond to changing business environment.
  • Proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office package (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)
