PURPOSE OF POSITION:
General tasks and responsibilities will include:
1. Plans, schedules and coordinates the day-to-day activities to ensure the continuous flow of work.
2. Assists in developing quality control procedures and quality assurance and instructs other technical personnel on aspects of their routine use.
3. Conducts training programs in ultrasonography.
4. Assists in the development of new tests by performing comparison studies and clinical trials, and implements these new procedures.
5. Assists physicians and other health care personnel regarding the nature, scheduling, or results of procedures performed within the Ultrasound Department.
6. Coordinates and participates the orientation of new hires, volunteers and students.
7. Assists in the movement of patients on wheelchairs, stretchers, and examination tables; to and from holding area.
8. Assists physician with special procedures such as biopsies and aspirations.
9. Attends regularly scheduled department meetings i.e., staff, in-service, training, PI.
10. Checks requisition form for completion, physician notes, physician signature, and/or special instructions.
11. Completes all paperwork where applicable.
12. Confirms patient identification by verbal confirmation, ID band, etc.
13. Consults with radiologist and/or other physicians regarding examination appropriateness when necessary.
14. Assists in the training of scanning techniques and quality control of equipment to new ultrasound technologists and students.
15. Describes nature and time requirements of requested examinations to patient.
16. Greets and introduces self to patient.
17. Identifies problems and communicates them to immediate supervisor; offers appropriate solutions.
18. Keeps room/work station, machine and probes neat and orderly.
19. Maintains, rotates and orders supplies/inventory in assigned area.
20. Participates in identified professional organizations as required.
21. Performs patient registration and rescheduling (RIS) in the absence of clerical personnel.
22. Performs visual preventive maintenance checks, records and reports results to appropriate personnel. Initiates service of equipment when necessary.
23. Practices sterile technique, prevents cross contamination to patients and instruments, and practices appropriate infection control, both in the Ultrasound area and on portables done on the floor.
24. Promotes good interpersonal relationships.
25. Provides patient with gowning and draping supplies and instructions.
26. Provides patient, doctor, and office staff with proper examination preparation.
27. Records patient history, unusual conditions/limitations and other information such as: exam time, room#, and signature on the radiology requisition form.
28. Restocks and maintains assigned work station/equipment daily in an orderly fashion.
29. Demonstrate knowledge of patient scheduling protocols.
30. Adjusts technical factors in proportion to patient and body part being examined.
31. Performs quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
32. Attends meetings, seminars and training courses external to the department in order to maintain professional acumen.
33. Demonstrates correct and adequate anatomic positioning skills.
34. Demonstrates anatomy under investigation using required ultrasound imaging techniques.
35. Demonstrates complete working knowledge of all ultrasound equipment within the department.
36. Participates in film critique in-service activities.
37. Performs all routine ultrasound procedures according to required protocols.
38. Performs more complex Ultrasound procedures, both in the Ultrasound area and on portables done on the floor.
39. Obtain any addition certifications or credentials, to keep up with changing departmental requirements.
40. Assist in departmental scheduling issues, and responsible to ensure for required coverage.
41. Prepares daily work log as required.
42. Utilizes hospital/department communications, telephone and paging systems appropriately.
43. Performs quality control testing on a routine basis.
44. Adheres to departmental attendance standards.
45. Adheres and conforms to hospital/departmental guidelines, polices, and procedures.
46. All other duties as required by the department.
47. Conducts Departmental In-services, training and PI.
1. Valid certification in Sonography issued by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI); and
2. One (1) year of experience as an Ultrasound Technologist or Sonographer.
