Job summary

Merck & Co. in Rahway, NJ, is seeking engineers for the Chemical Engineering Research & Development CERD within the Small Molecule Process Research and Development organization to perform hands-on process development, scale-up, and technology development for API manufacturing.

Work spans lab, kilo lab, pilot plant, and manufacturing sites. Role requires BS or MS in chemical or biochemical engineering and involves approximately 10–15% travel, with emphasis on GMP, safety, and cross-functional

Qualifications

Experience performing lab-based research/process development in a chemical engineering-related area.
Familiarity with unit operations commonly used in pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis, such reaction engineering, separations, and crystallizations.
Highly effective communication and collaboration skills.
Good organizational, interpersonal, writing, and time management skills.

Responsibilities

Design, plan, and execute experiments related to small molecule and cross-modality API process development, technology development, and scale-up for production.
Perform daily production activities in the pilot plant while ensuring GMP compliance and environmental requirements.
Troubleshoot and investigate technical issues and participate in process improvements.
Introduce new processes to internal or external manufacturing sites as products are brought to market.
