Job summary

Environmental Works, Inc. is seeking an Associate Scientist - Compliance to support permit-driven environmental programs in field and office settings.

You will perform inspections, collect samples, review data, and communicate findings to project managers while ensuring regulatory compliance and safe work practices. A science/engineering degree and a valid driver's license are required.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Science/Engineering is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required for insurability.
  • Experience with environmental regulations is preferred.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills are essential.
  • Ability to work in both field and office environments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform SPCC and SWPPP inspections as required by permits.
  • Complete sampling requirements on time in a safe manner.
  • Review analytical data and notify managers of exceedances.
  • Track inspections, CARs, and communications with project leaders.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies and maintain regulatory relationships.
  • Follow safety standards and wear PPE as required.

Job description

Salary Range: $55,000.00 To $70,000.00 Annually

ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST - COMPLIANCE | ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to understand and implement permit parameters effectively for sampling or other requirements for several different industries.
  • Perform Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) inspections of regulated areas and outfalls as required by state-specific or site-specific permits.
  • Inspections include visual monitoring of stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) and escalation of required corrective actions to be implemented including significant new materials or regulated activities that drive plan/permit changes, non-stormwater discharge evaluations, stormwater discharge visual assessment.
  • Complete sampling requirements (visual or analytical sampling requirements) on-time in a safe and time-efficient manner.
  • Ability to review the analytical data from the sampling results and notify the project or program manager(s) of any exceedances or overages.
  • Track inspections and sampling requirements, corrective actions/corrective actions reports (CARs), and communication with project/program managers.
  • Request information and communicate with various governmental and regulatory organizations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with employees at all locations.
  • Conduct activities in a safe and healthy manner and work in accordance with established OSHA and internal requirements.
  • Required to follow safety standards. Required to wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas.
  • Promote a positive working environment in order to achieve the organization's goals.
  • Help project manager perform environmental audits, as assigned, for ISO 14001 program, other regulatory programs, or as requested by clients.

ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST - COMPLIANCE | COMPETENCIES:

ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST - COMPLIANCE | REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • For insurability purposes a valid Driver's License is required.
  • Undergraduate degree in Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST - COMPLIANCE | PLUS:
  • Must be able to attain Class E Driver’s License within first week of employment.
  • Must complete 40-hour HAZWOPER training within the first 2 weeks of employment.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT and Hazmat Physical.
  • Must be able to safely wear all required PPE including respirators.
ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST - COMPLIANCE | PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EX PERIENCE:
  • 1-2 years of experience in an environmental field, or education/coursework related to environmental science, environmental regulations, natural resources, or a related discipline.
  • Experience collecting, documenting, organizing, andmaintainingaccuratedata and records.
  • Experience preparing or contributing to technical reports, plans, applications, or other written documentation. Strong technical writing skills are essential.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, and other software tools to organize data and prepare professional documentation.
  • Experience managing multiple assignments, maintaining organized project files, and meeting established deadlines.
  • Experience working both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage an individual workload and schedule, prioritize competing tasks, anddemonstratestrong time-management skills.
ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST - COMPLIANCE | POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
  • This is a full-time position. Ability to work flexible hours required
  • This position will maintain 34-38 billable hours per 40-hour work week.
ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST - COMPLIANCE | WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed mostly in an uncontrolled atmosphere. Exposure to harsh conditions such as: dust, fumes, chemicals, hazardous materials, noise, and varying weather and temperatures for long periods of time is possible. All employees are required to follow safety standards and wear all personal protective equipment in designated areas. Work in diverse environments such as confined spaces, various heights, and storage tanks. Work outdoors in all weather conditions; extreme heat, cold, dry or wet environment.

ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST - COMPLIANCE | PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, use hands and fingers, grip, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk and hear. Ability to regularly lift and carry 50 pounds. Sitting 30%, standing/walking 70%.

SALARY RANGE: $55,000 to $70,000
