Patient Interaction and Preparation
Identify and verify patient information using ID, medical records, or other means.
Explain the blood draw procedure to patients, addressing any concerns to reduce anxiety.
Reassure patients and help them relax before the procedure.
Blood Collection
Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures to collect blood specimens.
Determine the appropriate collection method based on patient age, health, and test requirements.
Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples.
Specimen Handling and Labeling
Label blood samples correctly with patient information to maintain sample integrity.
Prepare and package specimens for transportation to laboratory facilities.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of specimens, including the date, time, and method of collection.
Infection Control and Safety
Follow strict infection control practices to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
Dispose of used needles and other biohazardous materials appropriately.
Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to safety protocols.
Collaboration and Communication
Work closely with pathologists, nurses, and physicians to ensure accurate and timely testing.
Participate in quality assurance programs to ensure reliable laboratory test results.
Assist in training and mentoring new phlebotomy staff as required.
