We are hiring an Associate Support Engineer to build a career with Canonical and support customers leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer eager to learn, passionate about Linux and open source technologies, and interested in working with top industry talent at Canonical.

We regularly solve interesting technical problems—from triaging complex cloud environments, desktop and server issues, Linux kernel crashes, to OS configuration issues and root cause analysis—delivering expert support and satisfaction to peers and customers. You will be responsible for providing outstanding technical support across the full stack at Canonical, including cloud, desktop, and IoT. You will own cases from qualification to resolution, transferring to colleagues or involving senior engineers as needed. This is a remote role.

Location: This is a globally remote position.

The role entails:

  • Providing technical support from your home office for employees.
  • Owning new cases via phone, email, and web.
  • Acting as an internal customer advocate, keeping them updated.
  • Handling support cases according to SLA, aiming for high customer satisfaction.
  • Creating and maintaining knowledge base articles.
  • Drafting technical notices for communication.
  • Prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Continuously learning as products evolve.
  • Understanding Ubuntu development to set realistic customer expectations.
  • Maintaining communication with the team, locally and remotely.
  • Suggesting improvements to service.
  • Participating in a weekend rotation.

What we are looking for in you:

  • Strong academic record from high school and university.
  • Degree in a technical field or compelling alternative narrative (e.g., Computer Science, MIS, Electrical Engineering).
  • Confident in speaking up, exchanging feedback, sharing ideas.
  • Proven track record of exceeding expectations.
  • Experience with Linux troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge or experience in at least two of:
    • Linux server administration
    • Programming fundamentals (bash, Perl, Ruby, Javascript, C/C++, Go)
    • Networking (bonding, firewalling, bridging, etc.)
    • Virtualization/cloud concepts
  • Quick learner, adaptable, able to handle customer pressure.
  • Strong English communication skills.
  • Appreciative of diversity, polite, effective in multicultural settings.
  • Result-oriented, committed to meeting commitments.
  • Willing to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks.

Note: Background checks will be performed.

Nice-to-have skills:

  • Experience with virtualized environments (KVM, VirtualBox, VMWare).
  • Experience with other open-source desktop technologies.
  • Active contribution to open-source projects/forums.
