Job summary

The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) on behalf of TCAT Chattanooga State campus seeks an Associate Instructor in Automotive Technology to deliver instruction, develop curriculum, and support students and the community.

This is a full-time, 12-month position focusing on classroom and laboratory teaching, collaboration with industry partners, and ongoing program development to ensure COE/PSLO alignment and workforce readiness.

Qualifications

  • Minimum requirements include HS diploma or GED and three years automotive service industry experience.
  • Graduate of a one-year diploma in Automotive Technology or four years as an Automotive Technician; ASE Master Certification within six months preferred.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Technology, Education, or related fields preferred.

General Summary

This is a full‑time, 12‑month faculty position in the Automotive Technology Program at TCAT Chattanooga. Responsibilities include instruction, course and curriculum development, professional development, service to students, and service to the college and community.

  • Facilitate classroom and laboratory instruction, ensuring alignment with industry standards and program outcomes.
  • Evaluate and monitor student progress, assign grades, and maintain attendance records.
  • Provide academic support, advise students on academic and career goals, and support student retention efforts.
  • Order and manage instructional supplies and equipment, ensuring compliance with budgetary and program needs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum, share best practices, and enhance program effectiveness.
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry partners to ensure curriculum relevance, secure donations or discounts on supplies, and create apprenticeship, internship, and job placement opportunities for students.
  • Complete Program Student Learning Outcomes (PSLO) and Council on Occupational Education (COE) reports in collaboration with colleagues and program leadership.
  • Maintain required classroom and office hours (7:30am – 3:00pm M‑F), ensuring accessibility for student support.
Essential Functions
  • Demonstrate teaching excellence by using evidence‑based instructional practices that foster student learning.
  • Adapt tests and refine new pedagogical approaches that fit Chattanooga State's campus context.
  • Structure student experiences to ensure relevance in academic, student life, and co‑curricular activities.
  • Ensure that instructional materials and equipment are ready for student use, sufficient in quantity, properly maintained, and in working order prior to class time.
  • Facilitate classroom instruction, evaluate students, monitor their progress, assign final grades, and maintain attendance and grade records. Counsel and advise students on academic preparation and career goals and work to retain students in the program.
  • Develop and maintain a site on the college's Learning Management System (eLearn) platform where class documents (syllabi, classroom information, quizzes, tests, etc.) are stored and available for students to access anytime.
  • Maintain an active advisory committee that meets twice a year and covers industry and programming needs.
  • Remain current within assigned instruction, related occupational areas, and technologies; acquire, maintain, and apply knowledge of current instructional methodologies and materials; attend scheduled college, divisional, professional development, and in‑service activities; and participate in the annual faculty evaluation process.
  • In addition to teaching, the faculty member is expected to play a vital role in program development. This includes maintaining up‑to‑date programs and curricula, maintaining technical skills, and acquiring new technical skills as the industry evolves.
Holistic Student Support
  • Participate in student recruitment and admission decisions and activities.
  • Support placement of students with work‑based learning (WBL) experiences.
  • Review and respond to various reports in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with student services to support students.
  • Work collaboratively with student services teams to connect learners with academic, advising, and support resources.

Position Requirements
Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the Automotive Service Industry.
  • Graduate of a one‑year diploma program in Automotive Technology or four years of experience as an Automotive Technician.
  • Willingness to complete ASE Master Certification within six months of employment.
  • Evidence of the ability to teach students effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to remaining current in the Automotive Service Industry.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Requirements
  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Technology, Education, or related fields.
  • ASE Master Certification.
  • Prior teaching or training experience.
  • Experience with budget management, supply ordering, and industry partnerships.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and in accordance with the salary guidelines of the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Range: $51,149 - $61,379
