Job summary

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology Athens is accepting applications for a full-time Lead Instructor in the Adult Education program in Hamilton County. This vital role focuses on providing classroom instruction to adults at various academic levels.

This position is grant funded and requires a commitment of at least 37.5 hours per week in office. The Lead instructor reports to the Assistant Director.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in Education or subject area to be taught from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience.
  • Ability to teach adults math, reading, science, and social studies at the levels required for HiSET.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Skilled, patient, team-player at working with diverse faculty, staff, and student populations.
  • Ability to travel between campuses located in Hamilton and occasionally the five other counties in the service area.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the classroom instructional process: evaluate and monitor student progress; coordinate with testing staff to schedule student assessment post-testing; provide academic assistance to students; maintain attendance and student progress records; counsel and advise students on career goals; work to retain students; keep records of student contacts via emails or calls; maintain required classroom and office hours; assist other instructors; cover classes when other instructors are absent
  • Administer the pre-and post-TABE and CASAS tests after receiving certified training certificate
  • Facilitate new student orientations, sending reminder messages to registered participants prior to orientation dates
  • Enter student attendance, assessment test scores and update test scores accordingly
  • Coordinate with the instructors of each program area to develop courses of studies that complement and enhance the AE learning environment; guide students with deficiencies using approved curriculum; collaborate with Curriculum Coordinator Lead Instructor regarding resources
  • Remain current in instructional field and technologies; attend professional development and in-service activities; support related professional organizations; participate in faculty meetings
  • Comply with FERPA laws; participate in advising, recruitment, admissions, and orientation of potential students; assist students with job placement

Job Summary

Job Duties
  • Instruction: Facilitate the classroom instructional process: evaluate and monitor student progress; coordinate with testing staff to schedule student assessment post-testing; provide academic assistance to students; maintain attendance and student progress records; collaborate with Workforce Coordinator to counsel and advise students on career goals; work to retain students; keep records of student contacts via emails or calls; maintain required classroom and office hours; assist other instructors; cover classes when other instructors are absent
  • Administer the pre-and post-TABE and CASAS tests after receiving certified training certificate
  • Facilitate new student orientations, sending reminder messages to registered participants prior to orientation dates

  • Course and Curriculum Development: Coordinate with the instructors of each program area to develop courses of studies that complement and enhance the AE learning environment. This includes the development and coordination of remedial and developmental adult education, and guiding students with identified deficiencies in specific basic skills using Department of Labor & Workforce Development division of Adult Education approved curriculum in print and digital forms, collaborating with Curriculum Coordinator Lead Instructor regarding approved curriculum resources
  • Professional Development: Remain current within instructional field and technologies; acquire, maintain, and apply knowledge of current instructional methodologies and materials; attend scheduled professional development and in-service activities; support related professional organizations; participate in faculty meetings
  • Service to Students: Comply with FERPA laws; participate in advising, recruitment, admissions, and orientation of potential students; assist students with job placement; support student goals towards post-secondary education or job placement
  • Service to local SETNAE program and Community: Assist in the recruitment of new students, participate in local, public events with a focus on recruiting or informing the public regarding Adult Education services; participate and provide insight to the Director and Assistant Director’s decision-making processes whenever requested; provide input to part-time and other instructors regarding best practices, attend graduation exercises and participate in mandatory staff meetings; develop and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with colleagues; work to meet and exceed annual Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) set by the Department of labor and Workforce Division of Adult Education Assistant Commissioner, communicate with State staff regarding all AE policy and procedural matters only with prior permission from Assistant Director or Director
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Assistant Director or Director on and off campus
Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven curriculum development experience in basic skills for adult learners
  • Ability to teach differentiated lessons based on varied learner levels in a combined classroom setting
  • Experience in utilizing TEAMS software
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must possess the communication skills necessary to be an effective teacher and interact with adult learners
  • Must possess knowledge of the principles and practices of current industry and occupation standards necessary for gainful entry level employment towards the career plans of AE graduates
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal working relationships with students, colleges, business and industry, faculty, staff and the general public
  • Must have ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs and other appropriate software needed for the teaching profession, registering students for HiSET testing, and keeping accurate data regarding student progress
  • Must have the ability to multitask with good organization and planning skills
