Job summary

The University of Georgia seeks an Associate General Counsel to provide legal advice to various units with a workload comprising 80% counseling and 20% other duties.

Ideal candidates should hold a J.D. degree and have a minimum of 2 years of related legal experience, along with membership in the Georgia State Bar. Furthermore, a strong background in higher education law is preferred. This full-time position offers standard work hours from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Salary: $125,000 - $145,000 (annual)

Start Date: Preferred August 1, 2026 (flexible)

Responsibilities
  • Provide legal advice and counseling to assigned units (≈80% of time)
  • Perform other duties assigned by the General Counsel (≈20% of time)
  • Represent the Office of Legal Affairs on committees and in meetings with top administrators
  • Coordinate with the Attorney General’s Office on litigation matters
  • Exercise a high level of independence and maintain subject‑matter expertise in assigned areas
Minimum Qualifications
  • J.D. degree
  • Minimum of 2 years of related legal experience
  • Membership in the Georgia State Bar
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 7 years of legal experience, preferably in higher education law
  • Strong academic credentials
  • Admitted or immediately eligible for admission to practice law in Georgia
  • Willingness to live or relocate to the Athens area
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to plan and manage a variety of tasks
  • Experience working effectively with various constituents in a large public institution
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with sound judgment
Physical Demands

Sitting, standing, walking up and down stairs. No driving responsibilities.
