AES is seeking an attorney with significant environmental and real estate experience for its U.S. Utilities Businesses in Indiana and Ohio, supporting other Generation businesses. The role reports to the U.S. Utilities General Counsel, providing legal counsel on environmental compliance, real estate transactions, and related matters, managing environmental litigation and administrative proceedings. The position involves overseeing internal legal efforts, managing outside counsel, and advising business units. Industry experience is preferred. The office location is in Indianapolis, IN, or Dayton, OH.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Advise the businesses on relevant environmental laws and regulations.
  2. Represent the businesses in meetings with regulatory agencies, including IDEM, US & Ohio EPA.
  3. Support development of strategies to defend and resolve environmental proceedings.
  4. Manage environmental litigation, including state permitting appeals.
  5. Interact with environmental agencies on permitting, enforcement matters, and appeals.
  6. Negotiate and review legal documents related to real estate ownership and transactions.
  7. Support environmental and real estate due diligence in M&A and other transactions.
  8. Draft environmental disclosures in connection with company SEC reporting.
  9. Assist in other matters as needed.

Desired Experience and Attributes

  1. J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in at least one state.
  2. 6+ years of relevant experience at a large law firm or comparable in-house environment with a sophisticated environmental practice.
  3. Energy sector experience is preferred.
  4. Experience with environmental regulations such as CAA, CWA, CERCLA, & RCRA.
  5. Decisive, organized, and commercially focused.
  6. Ability to collaborate effectively across functions and businesses.
  7. Independent, self-driven, with strong communication skills.
  8. Detail-oriented with excellent regulatory, drafting, and negotiating skills.
  9. Ability to manage time effectively and adapt to changing priorities, with limited travel expected.
  10. Strong analytical, problem-solving, judgment, and discretion skills.
  11. Unquestionable ethics and integrity.
