Job summary

Dominion Energy Virginia's Electric Transmission (ET) System Operations Center is seeking an Engineer or Engineering Technical Specialist to support the transmission grid and real-time operations. The role combines engineering analysis, protection schemes, and data analytics to improve reliability and efficiency.

You will develop automated tools, work with WAMS and PSSE, and coordinate with the Operations team to implement new practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Engineering from ABET-accredited program or foreign equivalent.
  • ABET/ Washington Accord recognition acceptable for international degrees.

Job Summary

Dominion Energy Virginia's Electric Transmission (ET) System Operations Center Operations Department is seeking a motivated Engineer or Engineering Technical Specialist to support the Company's evolving Transmission grid.

The candidate for this position will play a crucial role in supporting System Operations staff by assisting with operating guidance for transmission system protection schemes, operational policies and procedures. The candidate will provide guidance and support to ensure the smooth operation of our infrastructure on the Dominion Energy BES. The candidate should have an interest and strong understanding of transmission system protection fundamentals and will work with the Operations team and other Departments within the Electric Transmission organization to address and resolve inquiries related to real-time shift operations. This role requires a strong technical background and excellent problem-solving skills to ensure the reliability and efficiency of our operations. The candidate will also assist with integrating synchro phasors into real-time system operations by working with Dominion Energy's Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) to identify new operational practices, policies, and procedures.

In addition to providing support to the organization as mentioned above with regards to transmission system protection schemes, the position will be responsible for creating automated tools to enhance shift operations and improve efficiencies. This role requires a power systems engineering background with advanced computer programming skills and the ability to access and manipulate databases where operational process data is stored. The successful candidate should have an interest in power system operations and data analytics. The candidate for this position will work collaboratively within the Operations Department to advance and streamline tools contributing to the overall success of the team.

This role includes entry-level to senior level engineers within the job series that are able to perform difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter and experience within the functional assignment area. The role will plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

Associate Engineer: 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience).

Engineer: 2+ years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)

Senior Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)

Technical Specialist I: 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience).

Technical Specialist II 2+ years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)

Technical Specialist III: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)

Prior work experiences as a transmission relay settings or circuit calculations engineer.

Understanding of the principles of transmission relay protection and experience with SEL relays.

Knowledge of inverter-based systems.

Demonstrated knowledge of electric power distribution equipment and electric/electronic instrumentation.

Understanding of Power System Generation, Operations, and Control.

Deep understanding of AC and DC fundamentals, including three-phase power systems.

Programming experience in Python, C++, Java, or C#.

Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.

Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.

Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles.

Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).

Equally effective working independently or in team environment.

Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

Preferred:

Prior work experience in an electric utility power plant.

Prior work experience working in a Transmission System Operating Center.

Experience using TARA for Power Flow and N-1 Contingency analysis.

Experience using PSSE for power system model building and power flow analysis.

Experience using the PSSE API.

Ability to breakdown complex engineering concepts for mass consumption.

Education Requirements

For placement of a candidate in this position, one of the following criteria must be met:

Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Engineering Technical Specialist I: $65,500 - $85,000

Engineering Technical Specialist II: $73,200 - $95,000

Engineering Technical Specialist III: $90,900 - $118,100
