Job summary

Dominion Energy is seeking a student intern in Electrical Engineering to build a foundation in power systems, data analytics, and grid modernization.

You will support the Distribution System Grid Planning team with defined engineering tasks, data organization, modeling, and documentation to enable long-range planning and reliability improvements.

This role emphasizes supervised learning, teamwork, and developing technical communication through summaries, reports, and presentations.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Analytics, or related field.
  • Interest in electric power systems, grid modernization, and DERs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with good communication skills.
  • Able to work both independently and in a team, with good time management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with Excel, Power BI, Python, GIS is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with distribution system studies including load flow, voltage, reliability analyses under guidance.
  • Support data collection, validation, and organization for grid load and DER forecasting.
  • Maintain planning models, spreadsheets, dashboards, and technical documentation.
  • Assist with long-range plan development and documentation of projected grid needs.
  • Contribute to research, data review, and documentation of planning topics.

Job Summary

This internship is designed for a student who is building a foundation in electrical engineering, power systems, data analysis, or a related technical discipline. The successful candidate will support the Distribution System Grid Planning department by assisting with defined engineering tasks, research, data organization, modeling support, and documentation in support of long-range distribution grid planning activities.

This position will be assigned to the Distribution System Grid Planning department. The successful candidate will be a member of a team that provides technical support for Grid Planning, Grid Resiliency, Grid Modernization, and Integrated Distribution Planning activities by supporting system studies, analyses, and modeling used to evaluate distribution grid needs.

Candidate should have an interest in electrical engineering, electric power systems, utility infrastructure, data analytics, or grid modernization. Coursework or project experience related to power systems is preferred, but the role is intended to provide a supervised learning opportunity for students early in their engineering career.

Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Potential Job activities:
  • Assist with distribution system studies, including load flow, voltage, reliability, and time-series analysis under the guidance of experienced team members
  • Support data collection, validation, and organization for distribution grid load and DER forecasting
  • Help maintain planning models, spreadsheets, maps, dashboards, and technical documentation used to evaluate distribution grid needs
  • Assist with long range plan development by supporting research, data review, and documentation of projected distribution grid needs
  • Analyze basic infrastructure interdependencies related to thermal, voltage, and reliability criteria with guidance from engineers or technical specialists
  • Perform/support evaluation, design, engineering, and support activities related to traditional utility solutions and non-wires alternatives
  • Research industry practices, emerging technologies, grid modernization strategies, and related planning topics
  • Participate in team meetings, technical discussions, field or office learning opportunities, and process improvement efforts
  • Develop technical communication skills through summaries, presentations, and documentation of assigned work
Candidate Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Analytics, or another related technical discipline.
  • Interest in electric power systems, utility infrastructure, distribution planning, renewable energy, DERs, reliability, or grid modernization.
  • Foundational understanding of engineering principles, mathematics, data analysis, or technical problem solving.
  • Ability to interpret technical information, ask thoughtful questions, and apply feedback to assigned work.
  • Planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve problems with guidance.
  • Equally effective working independently on assigned tasks or in a team environment.
  • Ability to process information and manage multiple priorities.
  • Must be dedicated to continuous improvement, safety, learning, and professional development.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools. Experience with Excel, Power BI, Python, GIS, or power system modeling software is a plus, but not required.
Education Requirements
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
  • Preferred coursework or project experience includes power systems, circuits, electrical machines, renewable energy, data analytics, infrastructure planning, or related technical subjects.
  • Must be graduating in Spring 2028 or later.
  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or above.
Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

No licenses or certifications required. FE/EIT interest or future pursuit is a plus but not required.

What You'll Get

Hourly Rate:

$23.00 - $37.00

The hourly rate listed is the rate we anticipate paying for this position. If a range is listed, the actual hourly rate offered may vary based on factors such as the selected candidate's degree type, academic major, and/or school classification (e.g., sophomore, junior, senior).
