Job summary

The City of San José’s Building Division is seeking a full-time Associate Engineer to ensure new construction and renovations comply with California building codes and state laws. This position emphasizes plan review, technical analysis, and coordination with Planning, Fire Prevention, Public Works and Environmental Services.

You will advise engineers, inspect plans, and support a rigorous permit process while upholding the city’s commitment to safety, quality, and service.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Architectural, Civil, or Structural Engineering (or Construction Management).
• Four years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience with at least two years in building design/construction.
• Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience.
• CA Civil Engineer or Architect license preferred; Plans Examiner certification preferred; ability to obtain Plans Examiner within 6 months; CA driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Advise engineers, architects on code requirements for buildings.
• Examine plans and calculations for residential to industrial buildings.
• Perform independent engineering analyses to ensure structural safety.
• Provide information to professionals and public on building and zoning requirements.
• Coordinate with Development Services partners for plan reviews and permits.
• Advise inspectors on structural, fire, life-safety challenges in construction.
• Instruct inspectors on review of simple building plans.
• Perform observational review of critical structural elements.
