Job summary

Brooksource seeks an experienced Utility Electrical Designer to support gas and/or electric utility system design and drafting. You will coordinate complex project designs, specifications, and drawings, working alongside engineers, survey teams and contractors.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and 3+ years’ experience in gas/electric utility design and drafting.
  • Knowledge of gas and/or electric engineering standards and construction practices.
  • Ability to develop project requirements and prepare complex designs and drawings.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read utility/site plans and topographic maps and extract design data.
  • Ability to perform field surveys and apply design standards.

Responsibilities

  • Under minimum supervision, develop complex designs, specs, and drawings for major projects.
  • Coordinate activities of designers, drafters, survey personnel, and contractors.
  • Collaborate with engineers, prepare reports, perform technical calculations, and monitor field tests.
  • Identify required codes and permits and obtain approvals.
  • Review designs for regulatory and company standard compliance.
  • Prepare layouts, sketches, materials, and finished drawings for permits and construction.
  • Advise on solutions to design problems and respond to field construction issues.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Utility Electrical Designer to support the design and drafting of gas and/or electric utility systems. In this role, you'll coordinate and develop complex project designs, specifications, and engineering drawings, often collaborating closely with engineers, survey teams, and contractors. You’ll play a key part in ensuring compliance with utility standards and government regulations while managing multiple assignments and solving real-time design challenges in the field.

Ideal candidates will bring a strong background in AutoCAD, system protection and control, and a demonstrated ability to interpret technical drawings and conduct field surveys. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma and at least three years' experience in the design and drafting of gas and/or electric utility systems; or the equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of gas and/or electric engineering and construction standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop project requirements and prepare complex designs, finished drawings, and calculations requiring limited engineering theory.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, manage, and coordinate multiple work assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret utility drawings, site plans, topographic maps, and highway construction drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to make mathematical calculations, make detailed field surveys, and apply standards necessary to determine design requirements.
  • Ability to use personal computers and computer aided design and drafting systems.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, and to anticipate and resolve problems promptly.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Associate Degree in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design preferred
  • Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • 3 years experience in design and or drafting disciplines, with a background in system protection and control.
  • A background in system protection and control is preferred, but not required.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Under minimum supervision, coordinates and develops complex designs, specifications, and engineering drawings for special and major projects.
  • Coordinates the activities of and provides technical guidance for designers, drafters, survey personnel, and contractors assigned to special or major projects.
  • Collaborates with engineers by performing such duties as, preparing reports and estimates, making technical calculations, conducting investigations, and monitoring field tests and surveys.
  • Identifies specifications and codes necessary to comply with requirements of governmental agencies and other utility companies and acquires necessary approvals and permits.
  • Reviews project designs prepared by others for adherence to all regulatory agency and Company standards.
  • Prepares layouts, sketches, material requisitions, and finished drawings for permits and construction.
  • Advises contractor and Company personnel regarding solutions to special problems in design of facilities and systems not covered by formal standards.
  • Makes site visits to develop and review designs for construction and to solve special construction problems. May be required to respond to emergency events.
