Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Develop work packages for overhead/underground distribution 4kV–138kV.
• Coordinate utilities and prepare permits, easements, ROW apps.
• Perform engineering calcs: pole loading, sag/tension, voltage drop.
• Prepare permitting docs for authorities having jurisdiction.
• Support construction, site inspections, and safety/quality compliance.
• Conduct root-cause analysis of outages and mitigation recommendations.
• Assist in design packages for complex cable/conduit projects in urban environments.

Job description

Talascend is currently seeking an Associate Distribution Engineer for a contract opportunity with our client in Greenville, South Carolina.

Overview

The role involves electric utility design engineering, supporting various distribution projects in both field and office environments. The position offers opportunities for professional development and hands-on experience in utility design standards, construction support, and project management.

Responsibilities

• Develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV through 138kV, addressing programmatic work such as overloaded transformers, inspection, and maintenance.
• Coordinate conflicting utilities and develop work permits, easements, and ROW applications.
• Perform engineering calculations including structural analysis for pole loading, conductor sags and tensions, and voltage drop studies.
• Develop permitting documents for various authorities having jurisdiction.
• Support construction activities, perform site inspections, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
• Conduct root cause analysis of outages and recommend mitigations using engineering principles.
• Assist in the development of design big packages for complex cable/conduit projects in urban environments.

Qualifications

• Completed Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET accredited institution
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
• Ability to utilize a personal vehicle for travel (reimbursed at IRS-approved rates)
• Willingness to perform both field and office work, with the ability to work outdoors occasionally
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida-Calc, or similar
• Experience with CAD tools, MicroStation, and/or GIS
• Knowledge of NESC standards and design standards
• Professional attributes including a collaborative attitude, inclusivity, positive demeanor, and professional dress

Shift

This position is based on standard working hours with some travel required for site inspections and field work.
