University of California, Merced is seeking an Associate Director of Residence Education for Resident Life & Conduct Response to enhance the on-campus living experience. The role requires collaborative leadership, program development, and on-call rotation duties.

Qualifications

• 3 years of directly related full-time experience in a live-on housing role in postsecondary education setting or equivalent experience (Required).
• 5 years of full-time experience in other areas of student affairs, education, community development, or related field (Preferred).

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $72,800- $91,000.

About the Job

The Associate Director (AD) of Residence Education for Resident Life & Conduct Response at University of California, Merced plays a pivotal role in enhancing the on-campus living experience for our students. Under the general direction of the Director of Residence Education, this position oversees departmental administrative and student development processes, student conduct and incident report processing within the department, leading staff recruitment, training, enhancing procedural documentation, and supporting assessment practices. The AD of Residence Education will be responsible for supervising a team of up to four live-on coordinators, fostering a supportive and inclusive area of residential communities, and promoting the academic and personal growth of our students. This position is a full-time, live-off position with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities and will serve in a mid-level administrative on-call rotation. This position requires responsibility for supervising, directing, and evaluating the work of subordinate employees, and exercising independent judgment in the administration of department policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION

• Assist with the tracking and enhancement of administrative policies and procedures carried out within the Residence Education department.
• Create and maintain strong working relationships with campus partners within and outside of the Division of Student Affairs.
• Represent the Residence Education department in campus-wide and system-wide meetings and discussions.
• Collaborate to support room changes, work orders, mail, and other administrative processes carried out by the Residence Education department.
• Provide financial, conduct, and other ad-hoc reports to the Director of Residence Education and Executive Director of Campus Life.
• Assist with the response and management of department communications with residents, campus partners, vendors, and external sources (i.e. department email, social media, etc.).

STUDENT CONDUCT AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE

• Manage Incident Report (conduct) processing within the Residence Education department.
• Ensure timely response to reports, appropriate adjudication of cases, and equitable case distribution processes within the department.
• Foster a conduct philosophy centered in equity, restorative practices, safety, and overall community wellbeing.
• Collaborate with critical campus partners serving the whole student, including the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination, the Dean of Students office, and the University Police Department, among others.
• Consult with the Director of Residence Education and other administrative staff members on cases with high impact and/or risk.
• Maintain accurate case notes, records, and documentation through the University’s student conduct/CARE systems.
• Serve on an administrative on-call rotation along with other department leadership providing consultation and support to live-on coordinators and respond to severe incidents on-site, when required.

SUPERVISION AND STAFFING

• Coach, develop, mentor, and manage performance of approximately four full-time, professional live-on direct report staff and support the success of four residential communities.
• Set expectations and goals, monitor progress, and provide feedback and accountability to direct and indirect report staff.
• Mentor, advise, and train department staff on Residence Education student conduct administration processes and expectations.
• Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and support professional development opportunities for direct report staff.
• Oversees, mentors, and develops staff, setting team goals and performance standards. Provides guidance on complex and sensitive issues, assigns work, and monitors team progress. Manages staffing needs, including recruitment, hiring, performance evaluations, and professional development to ensure operational efficiency. Recommends actions related to compensation, promotions, reclassifications, discipline, and grievance resolutions.

RESIDENCE EDUCATION RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING

• Lead department committees and process responsible for all live-on professional and student staff recruitment and training programs.
• In collaboration with a department training committee, analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive training programs for live-on professional and student employees, including annual summer training programs, ad-hoc onboarding, monthly InService professional development programs, and documentation of procedures and manuals.
• Foster a culture of continuous learning and development among Residence Education staff.
• Connect with critical campus and community partners to ensure that training activities provide the most effective and relevant information for various constituents.
• Coordinate annual and ad-hoc recruitment timelines and processes.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT

• Through direct impact and indirect mentorship, promote Resident Assistant (RA) leadership skills.
• Engage RAs in regular feedback sessions to learn about needs within residential communities, gain insight into student life on-campus, and ensure continuous improvement of programs for students and staff.
• Organize and facilitate residential leadership training workshops and events for student employees.
• Identify and engage high-impact practices related to student leader and employee development and make recommendations to the Director of Residence Education.

WRAP-AROUND SUPPORT

• Advise individuals and groups on University policies, student-initiated programs, and feedback opportunities.
• Mediate student and staff conflicts and serve as a resource and referral agent to campus and community resources.
• Facilitate and support student and staff connections and promote a sense of belonging in Residence Education.
• Engage in ongoing student-centric professional and personal development related to new and emerging practices, DEIA topics, and other University priorities.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in related field from accredited institution. (Required)
• Master's degree in related field from accredited institution. (Preferred)
• 3 years of directly related full-time experience in a live-on housing role in postsecondary education setting or equivalent experience. (Required)
