Job summary

Biogen, Inc. is seeking an Associate Director with deep expertise in immunology and drug discovery to join the Immunobiology Open Innovation Team in South San Francisco. The role interfaces discovery, external innovation, and portfolio strategy, requiring scientific depth and collaborative leadership.

Qualifications

• PhD in Immunology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, or related field with 8+ years of industry or translational research in inflammatory and autoimmune disease drug discovery.
• Deep expertise in innate and adaptive immune biology, immune signaling, and translational immunology.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to drug discovery strategy through evaluation of targets, mechanisms, external opportunities, and disease biology.
• Experience guiding experimental strategy across biochemical, cellular, tissue-based, flow cytometry, functional genomics, ex vivo, and/or in vivo immunology approaches.
• Prior people leadership, direct line management, or matrix leadership experience with mentoring scientists.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
• Excellent analytical skills to evaluate complex scientific data.
• Strong communication and influencing skills to translate complex science for leaders and cross-functional partners.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to scientific leadership and external innovation by identifying and prioritizing novel targets, pathways, biomarkers, and external opportunities.
• Partner with Business Development and Strategy teams to assess scientific merit of external assets and collaborations.
• Support scientific due diligence through mechanistic evaluation and translational planning.
• Help shape program and portfolio strategy by translating learnings into research insights.
• Guide experimental strategy for in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo studies to elucidate mechanisms of inflammatory diseases.
• Generate and integrate data to inform target validation and biomarker strategy.
• Collaborate across R&D to support indication expansion and lifecycle planning.
• Synthesize complex information for leadership and external partners with clarity and rigor.
• Represent the team with academic collaborators and external companies, contributing to credibility.
• Mentor scientists and foster collaborative, inclusive leadership.
