Associate Director, Global Export and Trade Compliance

Overview

The Associate Director, Global Export and Trade Compliance (Associate Director) plays a vital role in ensuring the University's compliance with U.S. export control laws and trade regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations. This position reports to the Executive Director, Global Export and Trade Compliance and supports the development, implementation, and day-to-day management of NYU's Global Export and Trade Compliance Program, a core element of the University's Global Ethics and Compliance Program. The Associate Director works under the direction of the GETC Executive Director, operates independently, manages a significant portfolio of responsibilities, and engages with stakeholders across NYU's campuses—including NY, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai. The role is suited to a highly skilled compliance professional with demonstrated subject-matter knowledge, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to advise stakeholders across disciplines.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include supporting and advancing NYU's Global Export and Trade Compliance Program, ensuring compliance with export controls and sanctions regulations, and collaborating with stakeholders across campuses and units to implement compliant processes and controls. The Associate Director will manage a significant portfolio of tasks, provide subject-matter guidance, and operate with a high degree of independence while reporting to the GETC Executive Director.

Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in international affairs, engineering, law, business, data science, or a closely related field.

Preferred Education: Master\'s Degree or other advanced degree (e.g., JD, MBA, MS in science/engineering fields).

Required Experience: 5+ years of recent, relevant experience in higher education, government, law, or international compliance, including substantive knowledge of U.S. export control laws and federal research security requirements.

Preferred Experience: 7+ years of experience managing restricted party screening systems and processes, performing complex export control and secure research reviews, compliance audits, monitoring, risk assessments, and investigations. Familiarity with federal export control and research security regulatory requirements in higher education or global organizational settings.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Exceptional organizational, writing, presentation, and analytical skills; ability to prioritize and manage complex projects; strong interpersonal and customer-service orientation; ability to advise stakeholders across disciplines; meticulous attention to detail and handling of sensitive data; familiarity with export/sanctions software platforms (e.g., Visual Compliance, Export On-Demand).

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of ITAR, EAR, and OFAC and their application to research administration; familiarity with electronic systems used in trade compliance (Export On-Demand, Visual Compliance, SNAP-R, AES, etc.).

Additional Information

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $110,000.00 to USD $150,000.00. NYU considers factors such as scope and responsibilities, candidate experience, education/training, skills, internal equity, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes additional items.
