Job description

Position Overview

The Associate Director, Donor Engagement, Next Gen is a relationship builder who works with donors and lay leaders (volunteers) to advance Federation’s mission and vision through the work of Financial Resource Development (FRD). This role is central to identifying, cultivating, and engaging new donors—expanding our base of support while deepening relationships with existing contributors. The Associate Director partners with volunteer leaders to craft and implement meaningful engagement opportunities that connect individuals and organizations more deeply to our work, strengthening long-term philanthropic commitment and helping grow total dollars raised to support the Greater Washington Jewish Community, helping elevate their involvement and investment in local, national and international Jewish life by helping them find and develop their philanthropy and leadership.

What You’ll Do
Resource Development
  • Serve as a relationship manager to deepen and strengthen connection with donors and prospects.
  • Personally identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of donors and prospects, securing gifts through face-to-face solicitations as part of a $25M+ annual campaign.
  • Utilize considerable initiative, independence, originality, and responsibility for developing new methods and techniques for relationship building.
  • Ensure consistent onboarding/welcoming of all donors, including Ben-Gurion Society (BGS) donors, with the help of our BGS Co-Chairs.
  • Strategic focus on lay leadership acquisition of young adult donors and lay leaders through inventory prospecting, scheduled outreach, connections with community members, and post-event follow-up.
Volunteer Partnership
  • Lead strategic partnership with critical lay leadership, including the Next Gen Co-Chairs and Next Gen Board, to identify, initiate and develop solicitation efforts, enhance current engagement initiatives, and foster opportunities for organizational and communal leadership development.
  • Own the onboarding and ongoing support of lay leaders by developing strategies for committees, meetings, and events, and by creating written materials such as annotated agendas and operational plans, including project timelines and solicitor recruitment plans.
  • Drive the development of a lay leadership pipeline in partnership with FRD colleagues, ensuring emerging leaders are identified, cultivated, and connected to meaningful opportunities for deeper engagement.
Engagement Opportunities
  • Develop and implement Board engagement, events, and other leadership experiences that foster a deeper connection to Federation and one another and further leadership goals, including large events, small gatherings, educational leadership series, and partnering with our local partner agencies, as well as the Jewish Federations of North America, on cross-collaborative engagement opportunities.
What You Bring
  • 4-7 years of experience in annual fundraising, donor engagement, customer service, sales, or relationship or account management required.
  • Strong donor-relations skills: proven ability in cultivating prospects and creating donor engagement strategies that lead to greater philanthropic support.
  • Data-driven decision-maker who is comfortable with analytics and data management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience in management of membership or volunteer operations and working with volunteer committees.
  • First-hand knowledge of the Jewish community, its customs, and practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CRMs; comfortable with and open to new technology.
  • Familiarity with Jewish customs, traditions, and community life, or a willingness to learn preferred.
  • Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Greater Washington (DC, MD, and Northern VA) region. This is a hybrid position, with 3 days a week required in our headquarters.
