The ideal candidate will have experience in data management and leading a team to develop strategic data solutions. Prior involvement with CCSG activities is highly desirable. Candidates should have experience administering research funding programs, with a strong understanding of both pre- and post-award and progress-tracking processes. Candidates should also demonstrate experience in strategic planning and providing high-level administrative support in a research or academic setting. A proven ability to work collaboratively with investigators, manage complex funding portfolios, and support research operations is strongly preferred.
The Associate Director develops and implements the data collection, data analysis and research benchmarking strategy for all institutional research programs, research infrastructure across the institution and the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG); in collaboration with the Executive Director, CCSG Administration, Executive Director, Shared Resources, AVP-Programs, Infrastructure & Planning, and leadership in the Office of the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO). The Associate Director will directly oversee the team of Data Scientists in CCSG & ERD which is tasked to design, develop, and manage predictive models and statistical models to help the leadership in the Office of the CSO make data-informed decisions to support MD Anderson's strategic goals. Will design and develop complex and relevant data analyses for research and coordinate with data collection units across the institution to create a central repository for institutional data to enable consistency in use of data for multiple purposes. Will provide input, assessment, and guidance across the research organization to enable data-informed decision-making. Works directly with CCSG Leaders and institutional executive leadership on the scientific and productivity evaluation of research programs and shared resources. Will assist leadership in the implementation of Cancer Center initiatives to meet the requirements of the CCSG. Initiates and fosters effective working relationships across the organization between MDACC faculty and staff, department chairs, senior leadership, and various administrative departments. Collaborates with faculty and the Office of Multi-Project Grant Development to provide comprehensive data for multi-project grant applications. Position oversees strategic plan development process and tracking.
Key Functions
Data Analysis and Reporting (40%).
· Oversee the creation of a comprehensive data architecture that extracts data from existing institutional databases, such as but not limited to PeopleSoft, Archibus, Eval and iLab etc, to allow data-driven analysis of institutional initiatives.
· Lead automation of the production of required reports following the mandated NCI format as outlined in the P30 Cancer Center Support Grant guidelines and instruction materials. This includes but is not limited to data related to CCSG membership, grants, publications, shared resource usage, volume of new cancer patients, and clinical trial enrollment with demographics.
· Lead the development of automated reports and visualization (dashboards, leadership presentations) of CCSG data
· Lead the development of automated reports for research productivity for Office of CSO.
· Analyze curated data looking for strengths and weakness in MD Anderson's research portfolio and looking for opportunities to orchestrate collaborations both inside MD Anderson and with external institutions.
· Independently meet with faculty or leadership to assess needs and provide quality data analytics support based on sources of data managed by the team.
· Lead team to identify, collect, survey, and analyze data for to provide data-informed solutions.
· Create models for data-driven allocation of intuitional resources such as data storage, space and funds etc.
Programs and Shared Resource Oversight (30%).
· Work with the leadership to identify methods to monitor the health of existing research programs and shared resources and lead the development of dashboards.
· Independently assess health of programs and shared resources using metrics dashboards and provide reports with supporting data to leadership.
· Design algorithms that will calculate maximum return on investments.
· Independently monitor the productivity of all CCSG components against pre-defined goals and report to leadership.
Management of Staff (15%).
· Develop staffing models and productivity measures to ensure the effective use of human resources.
· Directly supervise staff and indirectly guide staff in the Office of CCSG & Shared Resources Administration.
· Develop technical training programs and cross training programs and ensure on-going training and development for staff in area of oversight.
· Ensure compliance with all institutional training and other requirements.
· Ensure that position descriptions and performance standards are established for all levels of staff in area of oversight.
