Job summary

The University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMB) seeks an Associate Dean for Administration and Finance to lead business operations, budgeting, accounting, HR, research administration, and facilities. This role partners with senior leaders to support the School's mission and ensure compliant, efficient operations.

Ideal candidate has a Master’s in finance, business or public administration, with at least 12 years of relevant experience and 5 years in senior leadership.

Job description

The University of Maryland School of Social Work (SSW) has an exciting opportunity for an Associate Dean for Administration and Finance to join their team. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean will provide leadership and strategic planning for the business operations in the School. Specifically, this position will have direct oversight and responsibility for budget/resource management, accounting, business services, research administration, human resource functions, and facilities management. The selected candidate will serve as a strategic partner with other senior School and Campus leaders to support and advance the overall mission of the School. The Associate Dean for Administration and Finance will be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment, thrive in a deadline-oriented workplace, and harness technology solutions in order to more quickly and efficiently support infrastructure and management needs within the School. UMB is a public university and constituent institution of the University System of Maryland. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland. This position has a hybrid schedule allowing for one to two days of telework per week.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and implement procedures, processes, and disciplines fundamental to maintaining solid and reliable control within a heavily decentralized environment.
  • Interpret School and University policies, develops and implements procedures to ensure compliance by all units within the School with University and Legislative audit/internal controls.
  • Oversee all of the School’s human resource operations and ensures compliance with all human resource policies and practices, state and federal regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Oversee all financial operations including budgeting, accounting, procurement, risk management, and asset management.
  • Provide appropriate financial information on a timely basis to ensure statutory compliance and decision making by the Schools University, and University System of Maryland (USM) officials.
  • Develop and facilitate the use of key performance indicators/metrics and School-wide financial analysis to support informed decision making by School of Social Work leaders.
  • Provide leadership and oversight regarding the administration and fiscal management of the School’s research endeavors.
  • Oversee facilities management for School buildings and grounds. Advocates and advances the School’s plans for new facilities as needed. Works to improve safety and security of the School. Oversee the facilities manager including the move into a new building.
  • Consult and advise on all financial issues, compliance, and risk management for the School and the University.
  • Responsible for the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of financial information provided to internal and external parties, and with the USM auditors.
  • Participate on and provide input to multiple UMB committees and advisory boards.

Education: Master’s degree in finance, business administration, public administration, accounting or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of twelve (12) years spent progressively building a background in the various departmental functions. Experience in an academic health system or an institution of higher education is strongly preferred.

Supervisory Experience: Five (5) years of experience at a management/leadership level serving as a key strategic and business partner to a chief executive officer and as an integral member of a senior leadership team.

  • In-depth knowledge of a broad range of financial, operational, and risk management principles and practices.
  • Excellent knowledge of, and ability to perform, accounting, audit, finance, reporting, budgeting, and financial business operations.
  • In depth knowledge of complex transactions, GAAP, and internal controls requirements. Knowledge of state accounting, reporting and funding process is desirable.
  • Ability to develop, execute, and communicate about robust financial models and provide insightful financial analysis, performance measures, and financial metrics.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, team building, staff building and organizational skills within a complex and diverse organization.
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills to support decision making.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal and relationship building skills that are exhibited through the ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively use communication tools.
  • Ability to present complex information to various audiences.
  • Creativity in exploring and developing a high-quality control environment with personal integrity and professionalism.

Hiring Range: $231,000 to $245,000, commensurate with education and experience.
